I originally saw Avatar in an IMAX 3D theater with some family members back in December of 2009. The best place to see this new version of Avatar is in either a Dolby Cinema theater or IMAX theater. This new special version of Avatar is being shown in true native 4K HDR 3D and 4K HDR 2D. If possible, try and find a theater that is showing the movie in native 4K HDR 3D or native 4K HDR 2D. Dolby Cinema and IMAX theaters are the best quality with dual 4K DLP Christie projectors. Some of the other theaters like RealD 3D use only one 4K projector at 144fps (72fps each eye) triple flashed, however many newer RealD 3D projectors use one 4K Sony SXRD projector. Dolby Cinema and IMAX can display 24fps for each eye with no need to triple flash because of their better dual 4K DLP projector installation. Dual projectors also means better 3D quality and most of the time better High Dynamic Range picture quality performance.

Some select quotes from an article:

“On September 23, this groundbreaking film will be back on the big screen to wow audiences again, fitting the original Avatar with 4K HDR remastered picture. Additionally, theaters with 3D capabilities will show the remastered version of the movie with an added dimension to bring this stunning experience further to life.”

“The rerelease of Avatar comes just two months before the long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water premieres on December 16, 2022.“

https://news.disney.com/avatar-returns-to-theaters

Personally, I am a big fan of Avatar owning both the Blu-ray 3D version and the extended 178 minute version on standard Blu-ray. In theory in the year 2023 Avatar and Avatar 2 will most likely get a native 4K Blu-ray release. However, for various reasons that I will not go into in an online post, I will most likely not be able to make it to the theater to see Avatar or Avatar 2, I will have to wait for a 4K Blu-ray release to watch it at home. However, I highly recommend fans and anyone else that likes Avatar to go see the two movies in theaters.

I am just reporting the entire Avatar news and I hate to bring the following issue up. There are some Christians and family organizations that are boycotting the Avatar movies this year. The faith and family focused dove organization is not approving the very first Avatar movie that was just re-released. While this movie is rated PG-13 there is passionate kissing and a few comments about sex. Also, the language and violence in the movie the Dove organization does not like. However, this a secular family movie and there are some Christians and faith based families that will go see Avatar and ignore these comments from the Dove organization. Many movies like Avatar that are not dove approved are some of the best and enjoyable movies to watch and own. So, in some ways this is a good thing when a secular movie is not approved from the Dove organization.

Just got back from my IMAX 3D showing. Nice remaster, colors really pop. Still a stupid action movie at the end of the day, but a pretty fun one regardless. There was also a sneak peek of the sequel edited in during the end credits. Nothing huge, but still a nice treat

Also, nice to see logo plastering is alive and well! (Although I shouldn’t have been surprised)

(P.S., in case you want to know: The IMAX version is 1.78:1 while the Regular 3D version is the matted 2.40:1 version.)

Papa Dragon says the 4K is due in March with the second movie’s home release, so around then or maybe sooner. Nobody knows for sure.

Cool, the 3-disc set is far more expensive than it should be. For those of you who held off for the past 12 years, that's on you.

Seems like it's still in print to me. Found new copies at two Walmarts today.

Right now, Avatar 4K UHD is only available to select retailers and companies... It is not for sale to the public yet... Avatar UHD was supposed to be available in December 2022... Now the projected release date is somewhere between late March and April... Maybe May 2023.... Hope they put out a public release date soon...

'dug up' the digibook that I haven't watched in a very long time, but unfortunately my disc doesn't always load, it forces the player to reset about 4-5 times until it plays, but when it does it plays flawlessly. I tried again after watching the movie, and the same thing happened. (issue reading the disc, but when it works, it works)

anyway, the movie held up pretty well, for some reason over the years, I lost interest in it, but I should watch it more often. PQ is a little disappointing, though. look soft or low res sometimes, specially the cg models

that and my disc not playing properly, I'd be all over a 4k release

I had a weird disc issue too when I tried to play it last year. It loaded up the menu, but like....just the looping video footage of it. The menu itself wasn't actually there, so I couldn't select to do anything lol. Ejecting and putting the disc back in did nothing. Ended up having to just watch the theatrical cut on Disney+ instead

So I upgraded from my old DVD of the CE because the new 4K doesn’t keep all the special features and the extended cuts. Is the BD-Live server still up? Reviews from 2010 mention an easter egg below the Live Menu and my Disc 3 has NO OPTION for BD-Live. I’ve even checked out original copies from 2010 from the library and it doesn’t show up.

Quick question: I own the first one on digital in addition to Blu-Ray (the original fresh out of the theaters pre-special edition release) and I'm wondering: will I be able to still have the 2009 master digitally and get the remaster separately. I'd really like to be able to own both digitally (in addition to The Way of Water).

Is the first Bluray (the two disc set) worth holding on to? I have the 4K and the 3 disc extended set.

Is the original master still avaliable digitally? Pretty much everywhere that I use it's switched over to the 2022 reissue -- I can tell because 20th Century Fox is plastered over and there's a change of runtime as well. I'd really like to own both on digital.

Just read the sad news about Cameron.

He’s selling his California ranch where he wrote Avatar and part of its sequel

Especially when it sounds like his main house is his New Zealand one. And see the amount he paid for it vs the amount he selling it. I’d call that a good deal!

So, based on the released information, the upcoming 3D re-release is also just the theatrical version. I've been holding off buying the original 3D version anticipating the extended 3D versions to be released, but at least that means the oop 3D version will be available once again.
