No "Complete David Tennant Years"? Really? I understand that 2(ish?) of his 3 seasons are only really available at 576i PAL as their highest resolution, but I just found him SO much more entertaining/interesting to watch than Matt Smith.

EDIT:

Also, last I looked into it, anyway, BBC actually did a pretty decent (brilliant?) job with their upscales of the SD content, and as of yet the only readily convenient methods of watching Tennant - apart for buying the complete 9th-11th Doctors Blu-Ray set - is 480i/p streaming.

Actually, all of the Tennant seasons as well as one of his Specials are in 576i PAL.

All three of his seasons were SD only, his specials are the only content in HD. And insiders have said his 3 seasons are coming to blu on their own next year. They might reissue "The Complete David Tennant" box with those blus, but probably not.

Not entirely. The special "The Next Doctor" is also an SD upscale.

So I guess the Day of the Doctor readthrough from the UK set isn't getting released over here? That really irks me, but it isn't surprising given that BBC Worldwide seems to constantly be giving fans the middle finger.

The "50th Anniversary Script to Screen Feature," which is listed as a bonus according to the first page of this thread, is the read-through (well, technically, I think it includes some footage of the read-through). The UK version of this runs about 15 minutes (according to the BBFC), so it is not a full read-through of Day of the Doctor.

There are only two items in the UK 50th Anniversary collection that are not mentioned as being included in the Matt Smith Years Blu-ray set:

Day of the Doctor Cinema Intros
The Science of Doctor Who with Brian Cox

Perhaps the Cinema Intros are being saved for a special edition release of Day of the Doctor sometime down the line.

They COULD be included with this release since it does say "and more," there is just no way to know without a complete manifest release or the product coming out and getting in people's hands.

So I want to buy the collectors set but am concerned about how they were able to get their hands on more. The BBC shop isnt selling any more of them and it would make sense that they would be selling them as well if they produced more.

So...where are they getting more? Are they selling used sets as new? If they are that is pretty messed up.

I am kinda hoping they release Eccleston and Tennant Sets but I don't want to hold my breath and the way it is looking price wise, with everything added up it is cheaper to buy the box set. Plus from what it sounds like from previous posts they really won't be able to (just making an assumption) of making a huge improvement than they already have with the earlier series.

It sounds like next year they are releasing the Complete Series 1 on Blu Ray.

There's your Eccleston set.

The unpredictability of what the BBC is going to release next is what gets me.

Heck, I still half expect the 'Day of the Doctor' and 'Time of the Doctor' to be released in the Series 8 box.

I was one of the ones that ordered the collector's set once Amazon got more back in stock, and my set was mint. If it had been used or returned at all prior to my order, I wasn't able to tell at all, and I'm ridiculously anal-retentive when it comes to the condition of my media.

Concerning any more actor sets, the Tennant set is already available on DVD, it just depends on if they want to rerelease the set on Blu-Ray. The first series was Eccleston's entire run, so when they get around to releasing that separately, that'll take care of that.

Can I just ask to those in the know since Im a recent convert to watching Who, is it possible for the Tennant and Eccleston series to be eventually be given an HD remaster like Star Trek - The Next Generation. By that I mean is it possible yet prohibitively expensive at present, rather than absolutely impossible due to the way it was produced ?

Thanks

Unfortunately not because it was all filmed on video. The reason Star Trek could be remastered was because all the standard elements were on film. And given how incredible film can look, they were able to re-scan the film, create new effects in HD and recomposite everything.

Who on the other hand was filmed on video those four seasons. As a result, the way it currently looks on Blu Ray is the maximum that it can look in terms of visual quality unfortunately. Short of getting all the actors together and recreating the scenes on HD video, it's not happening.

It's pretty incredible the BBC shot four seasons in a row of a hit show on SD video in 2005-9. If anything puts a spotlight on the BBC's budget issues it's that.

Thanks for that - it doesn't surprise me with the BBC. They aren't the most forward thinking sometimes when it comes to their shows.

Bear in mind though at the time HD cameras were very expensive. They were offered when the show began production in 2004 but turned them down due to impacting on budget of both the production and visual effects, added to that they weren't sure the show would be a success.

It's also worth considering the UK has a very different model to the US for TV and more often than not it all comes down to budget, which often is quite low, unlike US shows which a very large ones. This is why HD only became mainstream for UK shows about 4-5 years ago and why so few episodes are produced at any one time.

In hindsight it's a frustration, but in context it's understandable.

Like I said, it shines a light on the BBC's budget issues. You're saying the exact same thing but in a more forgivable tone. It's "understandable" in the sense that I understand the BBC has massive budget issues with its more expensive shows.

Part of the reason was that then producer RTD wasn't that fussed about HD, another is the rendering of the effects. HD broadcasting was also in it's infancy in the UK then.

Why they couldn't have done what several US shows from around the same time had done and shoot HD compatible and just upscale the effects with possible remastering later, I have no idea. Wasn't stuff like Stargate Atlantis even still at the end of last decade doing full HD shooting but rendering effects at 720p to cut down on rendering costs?

We also haven't seen outtake reels since series 5, when those are obviously available (I hope they don't wipe those anymore like what happened during classic Who, although BBC is only obligated to retain final transmission versions of programs). I can't imagine why they would hold those back. Here's hoping sometime in the future that BBC and Moffat will make those available, because they'll owe a lot to us fans by then. They haven't been treating is too well either lately.

There is also a preorder for the Second Doctor story; The Underwater Menace on Amazon (which has been there for 3 months), even though an insider says there are no plans for a release.
