Don't forget Leave Her to Heaven. Price has a small part, but it's a great noir (even if it is in color). He was also in Laura, which also starred Gene Tierney. Unfortunately, Leave Her to Heaven was a limited release from Twilight Time and it is sold out now. It's definitely worth a watch, however, if you have the chance.

The sad thing is that for a lot of people this is his most recognizable role:

Glad you mentioned Laura and Leave Her to Heaven. Both are fantastic ( in Laura's case, classic) movies. I remember catching Leave Her to Heaven for the first time on TCM about a year ago. I was floored by how great it was. Gene Tierney unfortunately dealt with major health issues if you read about her. I agree it stinks that the movie is OOP. Laura also has a great twist.

Vincent Price appeared in Scooby Doo??? I grew up watching that cartoon but I don't remember that. That's awesome. Did he appear a decent number of times? Did he appear as himself, or did he voice the villains?

I am totally seeing Scobby Doo in a new light now

I sold off my Twilight Time copy of Mad Magician about a month ago... but now end up missing it, so ordered a new copy. I was also dumb enough to sell off my Vincent Price Collection vol. I about 2 years ago. By that late summer ( 2015) it had gone OOP with no warning. I frantically looked at local stores ( due to online prices skyrocking in what seemed like overnight) and somehow found one single copy for normal retail. I was extremely fortunate to get that back.

Moral of the story: do not sell off Vincent Price movies, as I will inevitably regret it.

My biggest regret was not getting Leave Her To Heaven. Didn't know at the time that Price was in it and never heard of the movie. I have heard plenty since then to now regret not taking a chance.

Started my The Vincent Price Collection I II III marathon tonight!

The Pit and the Pendulum

You know when you see that eerie castle with the raging sea from the beginning this is going to be a great film! Just love all the fantastic sets/costumes in this classy, period piece, atmospheric and film.
Francis Barnard (John Kerr) travels to his brother-in-law Nicholas Medina's (Vincent Price) castle to find out what caused the death of his sister (Nicholas' late wife), Elizabeth (Barbara Steele). Francis is getting several different stories on just how his sister died from Nicholas' sister Catherine (Luana Anders) & the family doctor Leon (Antony Carbone. What follows with this frightening tale is...

The Masque of the Red Death

Satanist Prince Prospero (Vincent Price), is traveling through a village that has the plague, so he has it burned to the ground. He takes a peasant girl Francesca (Jane Asher). He offers sanctuary in his castle to the local nobility from the "Red Death". As they play there bizarre games, he introduces Francesca to Satan worship. Prospero has a masked ball & sees someone dressed in red, which he has forbidden and his fears...

For me, "Pit", "Usher" and "Masque" in that order. Some great stuff here!

Thanks glennstl, I truly enjoy putting down my thoughts from these fantastic VP films and the like! I do wish they would make more "subtle horror" films (Universal Classic Monsters from the by-gone era, etc.) like these were made "in the day", especially with their beautiful sets/costumes, atmosphere, secret passages, spooky graveyards, eerily fog, castles, the raging seas, etc. I do not think we will get anything as classy as these in the near future though.

The Haunted Palace

It is 1765 and there is strange things going on in the town of Arkham. The townsfolk believe it is the work of a warlock named Joseph Curwen (Vincent Price). A young girl in a trance-like state is being led straight to the Curwen palace. She is taken to the palace's dungeon by Curwen and his beautiful mistress Hester Tillinghast (Cathie Merchant). Some townsfolk see her going into the palace. They accuse Curwen of bewitching her and drag him out to burn him at a tree. Before he dies he puts a curse on Arkham & it's people and that he will come back to seek his revenge.

110 years later, Curwen's great-great-grandson, Charles Dexter Ward (Vincent Price) and his beautiful wife Anne (Debra Paget ) arrive in Arkham after inheriting the palace. The townsfolk are none to friendly to them. However this does not deter Curwen and they head toward the palace. The eerie goings on continue as we are introduced to Lon Chaney Jr. as Simon Orne, a warlock and...

This is another stellar all-around film as it has those elements which I so enjoy, such as magnificent sets/costumes, the haunted palace, secret passages, torture chambers, the atmosphere!

The Fall of the House of Usher

Philip Winthrop (Mark Damon) travels to the House of Usher, to meet his beautiful fiancée Madeline Usher (Myrna Fahey). The mansion has a very foreboding look. We are introduced to a very strange man, Madeline's brother Roderick Usher (Vincent Price). He tells Philip how his family ancestors have all gone mad as there is a curse on the Usher family & its house. He sees that if there was a marriage to take place between his sister and Philip the evil would continue.

Philip is desperate to get Madeline away from all this madness. During an argument with her brother Madeline dies and is laid in the family crypt in the lower part of the house. As Philip is leaving the entombment the old butler, Bristol (Harry Ellerbe), unknowingly says that Madeline suffered from catalepsy, a condition which can make its sufferers appear dead. Philip breaks open the coffin and it is empty, then...

This has so many great elements throughout & has those special secret passages which I love!

If you are region-free, you can import the superior Arrow versions of most of the films that were featured in volume I.

I recently sold my volume I (for $150 on eBay) and did just that.

You summed up beautifully what specifically makes these films so classic and outstanding.

I love the atmosphere of these films too. I think Del Toro's Crimson Peak came fairly close to a modern version of these.

I honestly forgot there was a third volume out and now I remember why, there was nothing dire on it. I'll get it eventually, but I'll wait for a big sale price.

Overall(it did have a little bit of those elements of those by-gone era classics, though) Crimson Peak was just not my 'cup of tea'.
