There was even a new Sarah Polley interview for NPR promoting her autobiography where she pretty much calls out Gilliam for ill-treatment of her on this production (in terms of safety issues, treatment of children on-set, etc.).

And before this starts another argument about contemporary culture, I'll just quote what Scotty says to Midge in "Vertigo":
"I'm not telling you what I believe, I'm telling you what he believes..."
I forgot that Gilliam has a bit of some baggage around him now and I did hear about the Sarah Polley concerns. That is probably more than enough reason for Criterion to distance themselves from Gilliam.

Still have some faith that Sony will release it at some point as it was in their survey.

Gilliam is a great filmmaker, but he has what psychologists call an external locus of control; he perceives negative things around him as exclusively being the result of outside forces, rather than his own character defects. I hugely recommend the books Losing the Light (on the making of Munchausen, The Battle of Brazil, and Dark Knights and Holy Fools. It’s remarkable that no one got killed on Munchausen.

It’s interesting to note that when this film was previewed, it was about 3 hours in length. It was properly colour timed and the VFX was finished. I don’t know why only a relatively small sampling of cut footage is on the Blu-Ray

The thing that makes me sad is not the way that he seems to be deliberately trying to get "cancelled" for attention, it's the fact that he's so far out of touch that he doesn't actually know what to say to get "cancelled". Think what you like about Cleese, but at least he comes across as genuinely meaning the things he says that offend some people, where Gilliam seems to be trying harder than a teenage edgelord to be provocative for its own sake.

Calling Gilliam an edgelord is a good comparison. I put Cleese in the same box as Johnny Lyndon (even though they have differing views from one another). They both seem to be honest about what they saying to a degree (even though disagree with some of what they say, I can appreciate their work), they can both get a bit hyperbolic to get that rise out of others, but they never seem disingenuous, which is a quality unto itself and more than I can seem to say for what Gilliam says.

Either way they are all talented, as are many artists, musicians, actors, writers, and directors who have said stuff I disagree with. I just have to remember to separate the art from the artist, which is especially easy in the case of music and film to me, because more often than not there is more than one person involved in making it and is representative of more than one person's talents and/or world views.
