That's actually a great point.

It would also more likely than not have the ability to play HD-DVD game disks as well. Microsoft would want something that would be on more equal footing with the PS3s disc capacity.

The problem with that is that it basically screws over all of the people who bought the original 360 because they wouldn't have a way to play new games.

Gotta love M$ and how they're all about consumer choices.

If the format war drags on until 2010-2012 2+TB hard drives and INET 2.0 might be the norm.

2011 should see 4kx2k format wars.

I severly doubt that. I dont think we'll be seeing anything better then 1080p for 10+ years, and IF EVEN then. Studios dont want to give us perfect copies of the masters.

Yes... gotta love this. Barely 12 months into the life cycle of the 360, selling 10 million units worldwide, and they're already talking about another system that would make the current one obsolete.

Braaavo - <slow, sarcastic round of applause here>. Nothing will piss off your user base more than that.

When will someone tell Universal that until everyone - studios & CE companies - get behind ONE format, NEITHER will sell to their potential?

In fact, any stakeholder with interest in discs over downloads will need to press for 4Kx2K at some point.

^^^ I should point out that at CES LG-Hitachi was demonstrating a BD 100GB disc on a modified drive, and one of the uses they presented is a next-gen 4Kx2K format.

There is so much competition with the Chinese in the flat panels, that I expect the BDA companies to take advantage of the BD tech to push the resolutions much higher, sooner.

Without a source of 4Kx2K content, a display would be a gimmick.

And, 4Kx2K downloads are probably twice as far in the future as HD. Huge file sizes are also a good piracy deterrent.

The huge file sizes are only a deterrent due to internet speeds. Many of the hard drive makers have new technologys which will be out by 2008 that do over 5Tb per hard drive. The space will be much less of a concern, rather, it will be the internet speed that hasnt been progressing as fast as everything else. So yes, in a way it is a good way against piracy, but only until faster internet speeds arrive.

We're workin' on it, but the best way everyone can do that in a practical manner is simply to buy BD discs and avoid any Universal related products until they at least start supporting BD as well.

Hehe, quite... There's a bit of a push towards massive hard-drives now, but not quite like that. And of course, 'ownership' of a title versus renting a title is a bit of a nice thing. If they go with non-expiring copies, I can see it helping the BD-Rom endeavor quite a bit, since Holographics are still a bit away and BD-Roms look to be a very nice option.

Yes, it was the Internet speed I was implying is the issue. I agree that storage is about to explode as they roll out the perpendicular recording tech into standard drives.

They are currently targetted at pro use - medical, digital cinema houses, military etc.

How do you think they work on their 4k Digital Intermediates?

Bring on the combo discs. Explain to me why anyone would want to pay $33 over $27? This is using the pricing on The Departed at www.deepdiscountdvd.com which is usually the cheapest.

In fact, out of contempt for Combo Discs and spite for HD-DVD I just bought The Departed.

MS has gone on record saying that their HD-DVD drive will never be used for games because of that very reason. They could possibly integrate the HD-DVD drive but the only HD-DVDs going into the console would be movies. I just want to get the new 360 when it comes out so I don't have to deal with the hassle of them breaking.

Did you guys catch the part about 90% of them being released on that dual format HD-DVD, how lame. I think the HD-DVD guys are hoping that daul format will save thier a** because the playing field was more than leveled by the PS3.
