I'm convinced there is something going on behind the scenes at Universal. They just aren't acting like a normal company would. The only thing I can think of that would be big enough to disrupt a company's actions this much would be some sort of upper management turmoil.

It sure seems like the agreement for 2006 ran out, so Universal was sitting back in silence and waiting for the new money flood to be approved.

It was undoubtedly supposed to be all finalized well before CES. But, such is the way with big corporations and huge piles of cash.

I'll be the first to admit i'm a complete noob about anything Blu-Ray & HD-DVD (well, now i know some stuff), but i even saw that HD-DVD was inferior from the first bit of information i received so i don't know how a huge company like Universal didn't, unless they did but didn't admit it for some unknown reason- $$$.

But as soon as Blu-Ray is actually official "crowned", then all the efforts can go towards making that perfect.

I don't think sales of X-Box 360 will decline just because of the result, but the PS3 sales probably will increase because of the result unless the BR players drop by a bit.

I am not a gamer, so the Panasonic DMP-BD10 player is what i'll probably get when the price decreases (i'm a sucka for 7.1 sound!!!), and i thinkalot of people who like playing games once in a while will buy the PS3 primarily as a BR player, unless ALL the current players prices decrease by $200 on each.

Anyways, i'm still surprised people so obviously smart can be so obviously dumb & support an inferior format.

You hit it on the head. Coporations that admit to mistakes such as this one will equal big loses in all departments. Eventually they will have to admit.

Universal's decision to publish in combos is more telling about their position than HD DVD fans would want to know. They cannot possibly be too happy with the performance of their HD only discs, if they are preferring to release combo discs - these discs can only be more expensive to them, if not the consumer. I wonder if they are just not happy with the HD situation overall, and using DVD's assured past performances in attempt to just sell more discs (whatever form they come in).

Or apathy towards the format they were supposed to love. They have so much confidence in HD DVD that they had to tie it in with DVD.

What if we took turns posting Yoyo's work at AVS??? Once it was taken down another cuts and paste it... Or all of us at once starts a new thread with that post? Kind of like a revolution?
We may get banned, but it would send a strong message.

Oh I don't know about that. But then I don't know what will it take for HD-DVD supporters (screw the fanatics) to realize what's going on and throw in the towel. Maybe March would be it with PS3 worldwide launch and more great titles from studio exclusives. March would be just enough time to raise above the Post Christmas Retail blues.

It's not even subtle. You almost have to laugh after a point because it's just so damned ridiculous.

Has anyone got The Descent? Does it have a PiP available for the entire movie?

Why would they implement it as a secondary video stream instead of as a separate title? The latter would be a capacity not a bandwidth issue.

I have The Descent, it's a great looking and sounding title, it plays without any problems at all on my Panny, but I never tried to access the PiP feature. It's not something that interested me in the slightest, but perhaps I should give it a go, just to see.

The PiP option I saw is in the 'Underground Version' choice at the beginning. I only watched 2-3 minutes of it to see what it was and was just a smaller window overlayed on the movie with the director (or someone) explaining the scene/location/whatever that was playing in the large screen.

Apparently it is "fake" PiP since it cannot be turned on in the other versions of the movie or turned off in the Underground version.

So, it's really a second version of the movie, rather than being a secondary stream in the first version?

The FUDsters are making it out to be a BANDWIDTH issue, when I'm wondering if it is only a CAPACITY one.

Is the PiP on 100% of the time? If it isn't the whole thing could be done using seamless branching.

There are 2 encodes and 4 branches. One encode with the PIP and one without. Both encodes have 2 braches (Rated and Unrated). Its not an bandwidth issue, its that the hardware isn't there yet to do it.

Sony and NEC to Merge Optical Disc Drive Businesses
By: César A. Berardini - "Cesar"
Feb. 27th, 2006 4:45 pm
Sony and NEC announced today in Tokyo that they have signed an agreement to combine their optical disc drive businesses into a single company, Sony NEC Optiarc Inc., which will start operations on April 3, 2006.

Shinichi Yamamura, who is currently the Deputy President of Sony’s Video Business Group, will be the president of the new company, which will be capitalized at 490M ¥ (4.1 million dollars) and have a total workforce of 350 employees. Sony will own the 55 percent of Optiarc while the remaining 45 percent will be owned by NEC.

The new company will combine Sony’s expertise in optical pick-up heads with NEC’s proficiency in optical LSI logic. Sony is the main backer of Blu-ray Disc technology while NEC decided last year to join the HD DVD camp, which means that the new joint venture company will manufacture and sale both technologies.

As you can see, if Blu-ray Disc fails, Sony will still make money from HD DVD by manufacturing disc drives. That’s a great back-up plan.

Will Toshiba start manufacturing Blu-ray Disc drives? Could Sony end up manufacturing Xbox 360’s external HD DVD drive? This next-generation DVD war is definitely getting hot.

An look what happened:

match:

Will Toshiba start manufacturing Blu-ray Disc drives?

answer:

an with more hardware support: as of right now
an its been that way for over a year now.....
blu-ray optical drive production companies: 12
hd-dvd optical drive production companies: 1
an with movie studio support that blu-ray has over HD-DVD there is going to be only one outcome... an even TOSHIBA KNOWS THIS ALREADY

BLU-RAY is the winner because of support PURE AN SIMPLE
