Rich,

Yes it was indeed a very tough decision, but I think a good one in light of everything. Sometimes our best laid plans/hopes/wishes/dreams/desires don't quite work out.

I quite honestly beleive this TT will give me much joy and is definately a major improvement over the Revolver. It isn't a Forsell Air Reference or a Teres/Soundsmith, which are TT's I could could never even think about considering. I keep buying lottery tickets in the hope though..LOL!

Eventually I will upgrade, because I really do have my heart set on on Oracle Delphi V, if truth to told.

Default To use or not to use the Mat on new TT?

I've read 2 reviews on my new Marantz TT-15S1 (still awaiting its arrival) and they both differ in their opinion about using the supplied felt mat. Neither of the reviewers gave (in my opinion) factual reasons. I got the sense it was all a matter of personal choice.

I would like to ask for your opinion on this, as I need to decide prior to the setup process. Also, if I stick with the mat, should I maintain the use of the supplied Souther Clamp or use my existing Pro-ject Puck? I suppose this question should be asked in reverse as well without the mat.

I've heard it said that on an acrylic platter, one should not use the mat. But why then, is a mat provided? I'm a bit confused about this whole "mat" thing.

Any help and/or shared opinion you can provide would be most appreciated.

John,

If you are not happy with either option, you may wish to get one of these TT mats from Herbies; the 2nd is specifically for acrylic platter and is more expensive:

Way Excellent II Turntable Mat:

http://herbiesaudiolab.home.att.net/ttmat.htm

grungebuster Turntable Mat:

http://herbiesaudiolab.home.att.net/grungtt.htm

Even though Chris Brady of Teres Audio has not found a mat that sounds better than the wooden platters, I am trying the Way Excellent II Mat (first one) at Steve H. (Herbie himself at Herbies) suggestion for my Teres 450. I will have to check with Steve about the 90 day question since the Teres is taking so long, but it is still in the box.

As Steve H. had told me there are some Teres users with the less expensive acrylic platters using the Way Excellent Mat II with quite good results. These mats start at a price of $59.99 (and go up from there). If you check the Customers Photos for the Way Excellent Mat II you will see 2 photos in the middle of the last full row of Photos. You will recognize the Teres TT by the wooden base and arm platform with the lead shot loaded acrylic platter.

http://herbiesaudiolab.home.att.net/ttphotos.htm

The more expensive grungebuster Turntable Mat is designed specifically for the acrylic platters. The grungebuster Turntable Mat is $144.44.

You can read customer reviews for both mats on the Herbies site. They come with a 90 day trial period. If you do not like the results just return and pay shipping. Below is the link to the recommendations/comments for the Way Excellent II Mat; they are on the grungebuster Turntable Mat page at the bottom of the page.

If you're going to audition some ML's you might as well try and audition some Magnepan's as well and experience two different electrostats.

The MG3.6 may fit within your budget, they are $3,750/pair - http://magnepan.com/model_MG_36

Audio Excellence is the local Toronto dealer and they're in Richmond Hill - http://www.audioexcellence.ca/

With an acrylic platter, I would never use a felt mat. Acrylic is the same stuff that records are made of, so there's a great impedence match as far as getting stylus-induced vibrations away from the record are concerned. I have no idea why a felt mat is included with your turntable, except perhaps Marantz thinks that people expect it?

As for puck vs clamp: give 'em both a try! Whatever holds your records down best is the one to go for.

I've done more contemplating and stuff and Rich, I am going to go with your suggestion about NOT using the mat. Your comment makes sense to me and I never liked the mat on my old Revolver either. I found it introduced static on far too many occasions and I think the supplied Marantz mat will do the same.

Regarding the clamp....the weight will make no difference? I will not have to make adjustments for it?

I've decided to go without a mat. Rich's comments make sense to me.

I have to tell you though, Herbie's has got some interesting stuff and I am comtemplating some isolation solutions as my new TT will be on the same stand as the rest of my componants for now.

It's just a case of money right now.... damn!

If I really want to go crazy, this will be on my wish list. That will make me as crazy as the manufacturer.

Gabriel/Da Vinci Turntable , 195lbs, $60,000 with separate motor pillar and tonearm pillar.

That my good friend is one sexy looking "whatever". First thing that came to mind as I looked at it was the movie "Ghost".

Sex and music.....does it get any better than that? LOL!

Many people believe that high end audio/video is better than sex.

I don't think any adjustments will be necessary (a handy side benefit from using a 'table without a springed suspension!). By the looks of it, the platter and tonearm are both mounted on the plinth on your Marantz, so any effect of the extra weight on the platter will likely move the tonearm too. But I think there won't be an issue, unless the difference in weight is huge.

I think what I'll do then is bring the Pro-ject Puck I have and do the setup with it. This way it'll be done right and I won't have to worry about it.

Good idea! (If you have time, I'd still try both before settling on one. You never know what a difference it might make.)
