No, the Groovie Goolies ( spelled it wrong in the last post) not Ghoulies. Most people don't remeber the Groovie Goolies at all. For some reason it is one of the things I remember from my childhood.

The Groovie Ghoulies makes the rounds on Boomerang. They're crime fighting monsters (Drac, Frankenstein, Wolfman) and they cart around in these car reminiscent of the car from the Munsters. Oh yeah, they're also a band and they sing a song, usually during a montage in every show.

There was also the original Monster Squad, (not sure how many people remember this one) which starred Fred Grandy and featured him as a nighttime security guard who solved crimes with the help of the monsters (think they were in a wax museum) he was assigned to watch.

Boomerang is great, I'll have to keep an eye out for it!

Don't forget Kolchak: The Night Stalker. They used to play reruns on Sci-fi, but I think it may have moved to Chiller (which I don't get).

Kolchak was great. I was so disappointed when the updated version was on and it was just crap. The Kolchak's are available for instant viewing on Netflix. I'm thinking of grabbing that LG player that streams Netflix movies when it comes out.

I’m an admin on a site which is mainly geared towards Sci-Fi, but also has a section for horror. Last year, I put up my top 10 Halloween movies.

Maybe not appropriate for kids, but you can check it out here:

Um, it's on disk, btw...
(And testament to the fact that Darren "A Christmas Story Dad" McGavin never had a bad role, ever.)

And yeah, the Kolchak "remake" seemed to be born completely out of old early X-Files fans saying "It's kinda like Kolchak!", prompting them to make the remake Kinda Like X-Files...

I remember another favorite, the Halloween episode of Amazing Stories with Christopher Lloyd called Go to the Head of the Class. It was an hour long as opposed to the regular 30 minute episodes they normally showed. I have it on laserdisc along with Family Dog (flip side), the episode directed by Brad Bird, Danny Elfman did the score and Tim Burton did some of the animation design.

Go to the Head of the Class if pretty creepy and funny too.

I watched the Descent last Halloween. Seemed to really fit the mood of the season. I will probably watch it again this Halloween.

The season in the movie is fall so feels right watching it in October

That is a good horror movie, but I think that the OP was originally looking for kids movies (although I probably would have watched it as a kid).

I remember watching this movie as a kid called Making Contact. It was about a kid and his father dies. The father comes back and possesses his ventriloquist's dummy. It was creepy as hell, but rated PG. My younger brother had nightmares for awhile.

EDIT: According to wiki, it was originally a German movie called Joey.

Isn't that the one with the giant hamburger in the closet?

Speaking of scary ventriloquist movies, anyone ever see Dead Silence? That one was way creepy and had a PG-13 rating.

Might be, I haven't seen it in probably 20 years. I looked it up on imdb and I do remember now that after his father died, the kid started to received calls on his plastic phone from his dad. The dummy then starts to talk to the kid at night.
I don't remember if there was a giant hamburger, but if there is, I definately want to see this movie again. I mean, you can't go wrong with a giant hamburger, can you?

The Frighteners is a very underrated creepy movie. depends on the age and more importantly the maturity of the kids.

for a classic, GHostbusters

They are pretty mature sometimes in their movie choices. They have seen The Frighteners and Ghostbusters many times. Frighteners has been on the Sci Fi Channel or some other cable channel many times. Maybe they are ready for Dead Alive

I'm looking for stuff that maybe I have never heard of, which is close to impossible, or stuff that people wouldn't normally think of Viy is another good one. I am not sure if it is dubbed or not, as it is in Russian. I do have this, so maybe I will throw that one in too.
