I don't know why threads that talk about Macs always have to invite so much arguing. I just don't get it. I'm in a similar boat to BergerForLife in that I am extremely computer savvy, AND I have a preference for Mac computers. Yes, those are not mutually exclusive attributes! You can know a lot about computers and still prefer a Mac to a Windows-based machine.

Anyway, there's recently been some software developed for Blu-ray playback on Mac, which can be seen here: http://www.macblurayplayer.com/. I haven't used it yet, as I'm still deciding on which drive to get for my Mac Pro. I would really only use this (or any other Blu-ray playback software) for testing Blu-ray videos that I've authored, and not for actually watching movies. I'd love to see how this works, though.

Slight difference though, you aren't coming across as arrogant, nor are you attempting to troll other users, while BergerForLife is. You also post insightful comments, and actually offer assistance to other posters, and don't go on about how awesome your Mac is, and what you paid for it, and then whine to the mods about someone cursing when they say that another poster is full of crap, because a lot of what BergerForLife was saying, was indeed crap. Also, he's a hypocrite. He was acting childish himself.

I do agree that the bickering is getting old, and that some people on here borderline on trolls, for both Windows and Macs.

Second off, Apple is very reluctant into buying into Blu-Ray (acquiring the expensive license) because Jobs thinks that digital download will takeover (his words, not mine). He also has the right to lead the company however he choses, so I support him being a Mac owner myself (even though I believe Blu-Ray is quite a landmark).

As of right now, Macs support burning data, etc onto a Blu-Ray discs using Toast. So apple isn't completely out of the Blu-Ray scene.

However, as of right now, Macs do not support Blu-Ray Playback.

There are substantial rumors that the next release of MOSX 10.5.6 will support Blu-Ray playback. If not, then OSX 10.6 will.

and btw, OSX is ahead of its time (minus the Blu-ray thing). Apple is just trying to do what they believe in, and that is fine by all means, because that's what made them such a successful company in the first place.
And, it's Blu-ray not "Blu-Ray".

You're sort of right in one part and then slip off on the other.

What I said was in response to what the other guy was saying. Don't jump to conclusions either. I wasn't "whining to mods". Read more of what I say next time and try to stay to facts instead of your opinions.

The topic only changed because of someone trying to talk people out of wanting to play Blu-Rays on a Mac. I'm only stating there is a good reason for us wanting to play Blu-Rays on ours Macs, that's all.

I did some research on line and found this one, but it may not even work without software which they DONT provide. The device is the OWC Mercury Pro blu-ray LG GGC-H20L External? Has anyone used it to play Blu-ray on MAC?

Thanks.
You need a BDROM to play them.

This thread reinforces my believe that the Mac vs. Pc debate will never be settled.

It is still not clear to me! What is the best way to play blu-ray on mac?

I know — right?! It's like Ford vs. Chevy or Coke vs. Pepsi...just never-ending. It seems that the people who are steadfast in support of one OS and one OS only just can't accept that people prefer the other OS to the one that they do, and then they fight about it. I say get over it, people! No OS is infallible, and every computer will at some point or another have a problem, will hang, will have software that doesn't install, or hardware that is incompatible. It's just how it is. I see and use several different iterations of Windows and OS X all day, every day, so I can speak to this with a certain level of expertise. Just in my house alone I have three or four different versions of Windows, a Mac OS Server, and a couple versions of OS X. Then we have my environment at work that I support, which is all of that and then some.

I am still looking for this elusive answer myself. From what I can tell, the best bet to play it natively is to use that software that I linked a few posts ago. The next-best way is to run Boot Camp, Parallels, or something similar so that you can have a Windows-based OS through which to play them, as there are a few options on the Windows side.

The answer to "How do you play BR on a mac?" is:
Get a PC, place it on top of your mac, insert disk into BR drive, and hit play!

A Mac is a PC = Personal Computer.
To play Blu-ray on a shit Mac just use BootCamp/VMWare or build a better computer and buy a far cheaper BD Drive compared to how much Apple with overcharge for.

Edit: Apparently from Post# 74 there is now perfected Blu-ray compatibility for newer Macs with ( http://www.macblurayplayer.com/ ).

The licensed HDCP is now somehow decoded via the internet connection and mac blu-ray software / hardware/rom player connections.

Minimum recomendation requirements:
Mac:
OS X 10.5+
Intel Core2 Duo 2.4GHz processor or higher recommended
512 MB or higher recommended...

As stated earlier in this thread, the reason is because Macs do not have licensed HDCP capability in the hardware or the software and neither does any of the Macintosh HD monitors. Although I've experienced one hack/software that played portions of a commercial Blu-ray encoded theatrical feature, but it had no play control and stuttered sporadically.
Just build an HTPC or build a new computer which will leave all Apples in the dust. Oh wait mine already does.

Agreed, I don't have a mac. My girlfriend however, does and she has to have it for schooling and for your work. A pc either doesn't have the programs or just aren't allowed. (not sure which)

the myth that Blu-Rays won't play on a MAC is just that...a myth.

proof in the Pudding.

Using Quick Time screen record, I put my Batman Dark Knight Blu-Ray Disc in my external blu-ray drive connected via usb, and started Blu-Ray for MAC and wahlah!

http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/170...73HGd-960D.mp4

http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/170...7Wjs-1920D.mp4

It's a little choppy when recording, only because it doesn't like trying to play a blu-ray and recording the screen at the same time, but without the screen recording going, it plays flawlessly.

bought my system in April 2011, and i use the Mac Blu-Ray player ( http://www.macblurayplayer.com/ )

with a MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ240AS external blu-ray burner.

It plays Blu-Ray movies perfectly, but so far I can't get it to burn Blu-Ray's. it recognizes the drive, but it won't recognize a blu-ray BD-R or BD+R. haven't tried BD +/-RL. it spins a few minutes, then kicks the disc out.

this would be an inaccurate statement.

I had a Dell Dimension 8400
512mb ATI video card (no idea what model it was)
500GB HD
4GB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 - 3 ghz
23" monitor

I stuck an LG Internal Blu-Ray player and it played fine on my Dell Dimension 8400. I bought a HDCP compliant cable off ebay to run from my 2nd monitor port out to my Hi-Def Sony tv, and downloaded the Nero 9 (Highest version you could get) and SlySoft software and i was able to play Blu-Ray discs on my computer, patched through to my big screen just fine. It took a little work to get the encoder to recognize but once it did, I had full control, menu's , rewind, skip forward, backward a chapter, etc.

So if you can play Blu-Ray on a Mac, can you record/rip the audio using Audio HiJack Pro? It would be nice to be able to make some ALAC files of concerts and music from BD to take on the road.

I can't answer that question, haven't gotten that far. I haven't tried to rip a blu-ray, primarily because I haven't gotten a blu-ray disc to burn with this burner. At this point I was just trying to backup some data to blu-ray disc for safekeeping, but since the blank bd-r's won't recognize in the drive, I'm not worried about ripping a blu-ray until I can successfull get a disc to burn.

I may pick up another external burner from macsales.com

this matshita i have appears to have issues, because several threads on google have users mentioning the same problem.

http://www.123macmini.com/forums/vie...587ae5c8de8349

unfortunately, it appears to be a cheap drive with no support because I can't find any official drivers to upgrade the firmware to see if it resolves the problem. but at worst, it'll make a good blu-ray player to use with my macbook pro when I go on trips.

welp, you asked, i was curious, so i found out.

but yes, you can rip the audio from the blu-ray. I was able to do it in ALAC format with Pavtube (i've already deleted them).
you can choose any other audio formats too. files are huge! takes forever too.

About how big were the files? If you rip a CD in ALAC a typical song is 20MB-30MB. A higher bitrate MP3 file may be about 5MB-7MB.

appears I am mistaken, i mistook FLAC for ALAC. I don't see the ALAC option on Pavtube BD Ripper.
