Default Another Q/A Session with the Sound Director

Ah, I follow. Yes this is something where we will be trying to add these touches to the scripted dialogue. However, we wanted to do both scripted and non scripted dialogue using the same real time system. The main reason for this is that OFP: DR just doesn’t play out predictably. Some dialogue is triggered by making contact with the enemy, and some of it is triggered by checkpoints or in world events. You can blame the AI for being too frickin smart. Basically because the AI adapts to your actions and tactics, unless you play the mission in exactly the same way each time, the chances are the AI may or may not be engaging you when you TX your radio transmission. And even if you do play it out in the same tactics, the AI may well make different choices on how to engage you. Makes for good game play, but hard audio scripting. ;o)

<lots of good stuff about occlusion and dynamic ambiance>

Weather does not affect ambiance and sounds in terms of occlusion and filtering. However, we do have occlusion in game, so being behind a hill will mean you can’t hear as well as direct line of sight, or even being behind a building. It’s just hiding behind clouds that won’t make a difference. We don’t have reaction to gunfire in quite the way you’re describing. The ambiance as a whole ducks down so that you don’t have the odd sound of bids being louder than guns. The focus of our ambient system has been on making it appropriate to the situation. For example wind noise is based on player location, so things like height, tree density, surrounding terrain all factor in to the type and volume of wind noise. These factors along with various terrain type densities, such as rocky terrain, grassland beach and so on also work out the balance of all the other elements of ambiance. Like animal noises and so on. Time of day also affects the ambient field. daytime will sound different to night. We are very happy with what we have as an ambient system, but like a lot of things, it’s a work in progress that we hope will get better and better with each iteration of the game, and of course with good feedback from you guys.

< Again the PC community screws it up for us consolers>

Despite a well deserved slap on the wrist. I can clarify this point a little further, in that it’s by no means an easy job on the console either. Ironically doing stuff like this would probably be easiest on the Wii by sending the comms to the Wii remote speaker. However there is no Wii version. When it comes to audio on PC v Consoles, it’s not clear cut at all. There are strengths and weaknesses to all formats. Consoles are easier to develop for because they a much more known entity, but PC’s have the advantage of hard disks for definite and much better memory allocation. And no, I’m not going to say which one I would recommend as being the best audio. You will however have the opportunity to kill me on all 3 platforms at some point sooner or later. ;o)

<Hello Sound dev team!

Just signed up to these forums so I could express my gratitude for all the work you guys are doing for OFP DR.

I think that the challenges your facing trying to capture realistic ADR, Foley and Sound scaping are really REALLY tough. So for all the late nights your probably putting in and all the times that feel like putting your foot through Pro-tools....Thank you

Been following most of the sound updates and each one fills me with more confidence that your making all the best decisions for an immersive final product. Thanks for taking the time to update and answer questions too.

Just a thought in regard to the ADR... have you considered adding short inhalations in between sentences to try to smooth over the inherently disjointed sound?

Obviously you can't put a breath in between every file but it might help..

Also when it rains, will i hear the rain hitting different materials, e.g. the gun, the clothing, cars, roof tops?

Cheers guys>

You’re welcome. As to the dialogue, the radio effects will help reduce it somewhat, but it’s mostly down to the performance of the actor. Some of the guy’s we had in really nailed it and it’s pretty hard to tell the joins.

RJL

<A question I've been wanting to ask about the sound in general: Does the engine have doppler effects?>

Absolutely it does, and thanks to Viiiper for the science lesson in the physics of dynamic acoustics. ;o)

We also have realistic speed of sound calculation.

DragonTHC

<well, first, this sounds worlds better than the English-speaking russian cast of previous games. I hope you hired real black dudes to play black dudes in this one.

My only complaint is that he doesn't really sound like a marine. He sounds more like an airman or soldier. There's a certain sound to the voice of a marine, he forcibly says words from his diaphragm.>

We tried to make the voices representative, naturally we can’t have every accent and ethnic background on the planet, but we tried to make sure that there were at least some variation in the USMC voices representative of USMC troops.

I have spent a lot of time talking to a lot of marines. I know the diaphragm projection you mean, however I’ve found this tends to be more typical of DI’s and regular NCO’s. The force recon guys and regular PFC’s and so on.

akaFugitive

<Throat mics>

I’ve used em too, from our research though it seems the USMC still relies a lot on hand held’s and so on.
Cheers

Personally any game that you become attached to you generally watch it more intently then other games...

Just wanted to confirm that as is the case with almost all of our major releases, OFP: DR is planned to have a demo released prior to launch for all platforms.

I don't have any further details at the moment regarding dates and content, but I will keep on updating this thread as and when new info becomes available.

[part of the Q/A]
It will be a public consumer demo available to all (assuming you have an internet connection)

This game seriously needs to not release after COD MW2 ...or even a month before it ... cause alot of people will just say "Meh, I'll just wait for MW2" ... So a September date would be ideal. IMO... Cause they'll need some time for word of mouth sales.

As I said before the devs have confirmed a demo but not when.

So we just have to wait and see.

Default 24/06 - Sion Lenton update regarding Hardcore mode

http://community.codemasters.com/for...86&postcount=1

Quote:
Many thanks again to Sion for another excellent update, thanks also to the team for the community exclusive images accompanying this post.

This is Hardcore!

Hi all, I thought it might be time for another update on Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

Now the dust has settled from E3 (and the jetlag) its back to business as usual, we’re all very pleased at how Operation Flashpoint was received at the show and nominations for best shooter from IGN and Gamespot gave us a tremendous sense of achievement.

Today I thought I’d take the opportunity to write a few words about the hardcore mode in our game. We have 3 levels of gameplay; Assisted, Normal and Hardcore. I like to think of Hardcore as turning the game up to 11, we’ve had to add the number 11 as a result of the feedback from you guys on our initial hardcore screenshots released back in May.

You lot are a bunch of masochists but, you’ve got it; the hardcore mode in Operation Flashpoint will contain no HUD/UI elements at all other than radio chatter subtitles. That’s right, no crosshair, no compass, no gun or ammo displays…Nothing…

There will be no objective markers, no bleed meter, no direction of fire indicator, no enemy location highlights and no damage indicators. Nothing!

To show you what we mean, here's an example for you all taken with the new hardcore settings.

All navigation will have to be done via the map; calling up your QCR (quick command radial) will show you your fireteam status only while the button is held, and pressing weapons select will bring up the weapon/ammo selection menu, again only visible whilst the button is pressed. In addition there are no checkpoints, no soft saves and no hard saves, there’s only one word for it, HARDCORE!!!

I hope that satisfies your ravenous appetite for pain and misery ive gotta say after playing it for the last few days im already loving it!

Time to sign off now, games don’t make themselves.

Thanks again for all your support, there’s been some fascinating discussions on the forum over the last few weeks and im pleased my feedback on the E3 demo allayed some of your concerns

So, until the next time, I’m look forward to popping a cap in your head online, nothing to serious, but enough to make you bleed, badly.

Sion
