[Show spoiler] 10/05/18: -X: The Man With The X-Ray Eyes * (1963): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A doctor (Ray Milland) uses himself as a Guinea Pig in an experiment utilizing special eye drops that will allow him to see beyond the approximately 10% of the limits of human perception...only to find that what he glimpses out there, shimmering through a kaleidoscopic miasma of light, is more terrifying than can be tolerated by the human psyche. Nifty little exercise in the Mad Scientist genre (produced and directed by Roger Corman) boasts neat "Spectarama" visual effects when the camera takes Milland's viewpoint and a memorably shocking final image. Definitely one of Corman's better features. -Body Parts * (1991): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Grisly thriller about a police psychologist (Jeff Fahey) who loses his arm in a terrible roadside accident and has a donor limb grafted onto his shoulder...and who is soon tormented by frightening visions of murder. Investigating, he soon learns his new appendage belonged to a deceased death row inmate, and that two other men who have received transplants from what was left over are suffering similar side effects. We've seen the "transplanted body part possesses its new host" schtick before (hell, I saw it earlier this month in the Body Bags segment "Eye"), and it's given plodding treatment here by co-screenwriter and director Eric Red (who wrote 80's genre favorites like The Hitcher and Near Dark), who never gets a proper handle on the material, playing it too straight to be campy and too silly to be authentically gripping. Only a brief car chase -- with Fahey, in the passenger seat of a police cruiser, handcuffed to someone in the driver's seat of a car in the other lane -- offers any real innovation, and Loek Dikker's lush score (replete with what sounds like a keening Theremin) works hard to make it all feel more impactful than it is, but overall it's a bloody mess. |

![]() ![]() 10/5 Ghoulies II (1988) ![]() ![]() Despite the commendable efforts in puppetry and effects the Ghoulies sequel fell flat for me because of the flimsy story and characters. Which isn't to say the cast doesn't try to raise the material to a higher level but it failed to click, at least for me. |

![]() ![]() 8. THE INVISIBLE MAN ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's hard to pick a favorite for the Universal monster movies but this would be a candidate for me. Director James Whale gives us the second of his three great monster movies. Claude Rains gives one of the most amazing voice only performances ever and the rest of the cast do a great job in bringing The Invisible Man to life. Pretty good special effects for the time. [Show spoiler] 10/03 - Piranha II: The Spawning 10/03 - Zombie Dead (Zonbi-Dedd0) 10/04 - TV Episode: Unhappily Ever After - Ryan, Vampire Slayer 10/04 - Satan's Slaves 10/04 - Abbott & Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Piranha II - Obviously the flying piranha aspect of this movie is ridiculous, but I still think this is a pretty fun movie with some pretty gross gore. Zombie Dead - This is a piece of shit hour-long Japanese zombie movie with two hot girls and two zombies in an abandoned hospital. There are also two dudes with trashcans on their heads. While a piece of shit, it's not as much a piece of shit as you'd expect from the cover: ![]() It's got a bit of atmosphere in the beginning and some effectively creepy music, it's just kinda of dull and repetitive. There's one scene where a girl is tied to a chair and keeps kicking a zombie away as she tries to untie herself that lasts for almost two minutes. Cut to her kicking, then back to the zombie being kicked. Repeat. For two minutes. Unhappily Ever After - Ryan, Vampire Slayer - Another Halloween episode, this time a cheerleader/vampire slayer (but not really) is injured and Ryan has to take over. Not much horror in one of these episodes, but there is a Yoko Ono/Priscilla Presley joke that's told literally 5 times. This scene in a graveyard has a great spooky, slightly Hammer look about it. ![]() Satan's Slaves - Premiered on Shudder last night. This is a solid Indonesian Conjuring style movie with a lot of creepy imagery and one absolute doozy of an out-of-nowhere death scene. Abbott & Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde - This is a lot of fun when it picks up, but it takes about 20 minutes before it becomes an A&C movie. It's like they were late getting there and they started without them. This one gets pretty weird: ![]() |

![]() 10/5: Ghost Stories ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the better anthology horror movies recently. Has a few truly scary moments. Almost gave it 4 skulls but the ending is just a bit off. 5 Oct - Poltergeist
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After revisiting Poltergeist, something just dawned on me. Most movies don't build on the family dynamic like this one did. It handles this aspect of storytelling flawlessly. But in terms of horror, Poltergeist achieves with practical effects what most CGI fests today can't. Moreover, it is one of the few that utilizes the strong family dynamic to give the viewer a sense of relief amidst all the terror. It really touches the heart for a horror film. Bravo Speilberg, er...I mean Hooper. 14 Sep - Summer of 84* ![]() ![]() ![]() 16 Sep - Rob Zombie's Halloween ![]() ![]() 17 Sep - Sorority Row ![]() ![]() ![]() 20 Sep - The Nun* ![]() ![]() 23 Sep - Alice Sweet Alice* ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 24 Sep - Mandy* ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 26 Sep - Drag Me To Hell ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 27 Sep - Hell Fest ![]() ![]() ![]() 28 Sep - Terrifier ![]() ![]() ![]() 29 Sep - Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1 Oct - Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2 Oct - Bay of Blood (Twitch of the Death Nerve) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 3 Oct - When a Stranger Calls (2006) ![]() ![]() ![]() 4 Oct - Would You Rather ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 5 Oct - Poltergeist ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Usually I love a an honest to goodness, simple meat and potatoes Slasher but this one is a drag. The killer's motivations are as weak sauce as it gets, there's too many long stretches of uneventful moments and I pegged the killer 5 minutes in. Some of the kills and Tom Savini's work redeemed it somewhat though. |
