i forget who posted it, but full 1080p games require some obscene amount of storage for all those textures. i won't pretend like i know the numbers but if i remember correctly it would be fairly easy to approach 20 gigs no problem. thus, it really may not be pork as you say.

most of the data in a MMOG is server side and the portion that isn't is likely better stored on local HDD and not a slow optical disc. Ok I'll say it with a straigh face. gaming textures are crafted to be as detailed as they can for their small size. They don't usually take up space ...cut scenes and other extranneous "eye candy" is what takes up space. There ....it's off my chest. Whew. |

wow, this is degrading fast and off-topic.
as for multi player games, it would make no sense for any graphics to be stored server side. the only service a server provides is a place to log in and transmit movement, and weapon data while also providing data regarding bots. the client would then receive these small data bits and integrate them into the larger game. otherwise, large amounts of graphics data will clog the pipe and produce serious lag. |

exactly or you can use textures that aren't particulary great ie something like ffxi so that most of the game world can be stored client side and all the calculations can be done client side but just the textures are added. its still like a 10 gig game and its graphics are very poor.
