I do want to avoid yelling and carrying on like mad man on Christmas morning. Please someone tell us what settings to make on the PS3 and Onkyo 605 so that everything works and there is no frustration. I have read any number of things but dang it I just want THE ANSWER, please, please, please.

works fine here -- 605 and a PS3. set it to PCM/HDMI (not physically at the ps3 right now so i can't give you the exact settings, but you DON'T want bitstream over HDMI. You want PCM, or LPCM I think)

of course, for DTS-MA, you get the core (I think I have that right). something like 1.5 mbps.

You also want to make sure the 605 is set to "Multi-Channel PCM"

Folks, just would like you all to know:

That new Panasonic BD30 is worth it! I got it yesterday, hooked it up, did the setup, and WOW! My Onkyo 805 now reads "Dolby THD" and "DTS MSTR" on its screen. I at last get the raw signal through bitstream, and the 805 now can at last do the decoding. And you know what? You can hear the difference.

I am not bashing the PS3, cause I am still keeping it. But folks, the LPCM signal you are getting to your receiver from the PS3 is no where near as good as getting the raw signal and your receiver doing the decoding. I was able to notice the difference in SQ imediately. The difference is almost like the difference between hearing with your ears plugged up (like when you are sick), and your ears popped and cleared up. All the more reason now, for all PS3 owners to start banging on SONY's doors and demand an answer - WILL we get bitstream or not? Because once you hear what I have heard, you'll never want to go back to LPCM ever again.

Oh, and the DTS HS MA movies sound much better than the DD TRUE HD movies. Oh such clarity, and even the directional sounds are amazing.

Congrats!

Another comfirmation of bitstreaming vs. internal decoding and bitstream being the winner! I know on paper they should be no difference between the two but, the real world results say other wise.

...how can it be "confirmed" when he made no adjustments to compensate for the difference in signal transfer from a completely different player??

(Not to mention we dont even know what movie he is using as comparison??...not very scientific.)

...confirmed??

...in your Onkyo settings, be sure HDMI Audio Out = OFF

Interesting how he seems to also be "confirming" that there's a difference between DTS HD MA that's internally decoded and sent via LPCM and DTS HD MA that's bitstreamed. Anybody else see a problem with that or is it just me?

The screaming and carrying on is most likely to occur if you're unaware that the PS3 doesn't come with an HDMI cable. Be sure you have an extra handy for the hookup.

You mean besides the fact the PS3 cannot decode or even send DTS-HD MA and the Pansonic30 can only send it as bitstream with no internal decoding...so no comparison can even take place.

Dolby TrueHD could be tested...PS3 internally decodes into Linear PCM vs. Panasonic30 Bitstream...but too many factors could affect this comparison. For instance sound level matching, dialnorm (if any),bass management, Receiver DSP's being applied...hell, I'm not even at this guys house to even know if he's selecting the correct audio track on the disc?!

...you mean problems like that?

So with my Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH and PS3 60GB connected via HDMI, is it possible to truly experience the glory known as DTS-HD and Dolby TRUE-HD? I suppose I don't really get how it works.

yes, you can Dolby TrueHD, set PS3 to Linear PCM.

for Dts-HD Master audio, not yet...so its irrelevant if the PS3 is on Linear PCM or Bitstream.

Precisely. I smell DUD ... or at least a DUD'er.

My post is to say that bitstreaming vs intenal sounds better, true DTS-HD no comparison but far as Dolby TrueHD or LPCM there is a difference. I'm no fan of HD-DVD so i don't see how that fits in. Yes there may be variables to bring into play but many have posted their findings between the two are hearing the difference.

On yeah; I have that covered twice. I misplaced the first one from I purchased from monoprice so I had to buy a second one at a much higher price from Wal-Mart just today. I now have a plethora of optical and component cables to get rid of, in some fashion.

Ok, I got over enthusiastic and forgot to post a whole Audio/Video magazine review for all. Sorry, I just got so excited to see the lights lit up on my receiver at last

No, I did not make any adjustments to my receiver (Onkyo 805). I basically disconnected the PS3, took the BD30 out of the box, ran it's setup and set it to bitstream only, and played a bunch of my BD movies to hear how they sounded. But then, I had everything tweaked for the PS3, so that would have given a handicap to the BD30 to overcome, right?

As mentioned, there is no way to compare the DTS HDMA, but to actually HEAR it played, is wonderous. To my ears, it is better than True HD.

As to True HD, looking at the movies I tested now, I guess I can see where I made a slight mistake - I did not have all that many TRUE HD movies. Most of what I heard that impressed me so, were the DTS HDMA movies. Ghost Rider, SM2, SM3, and the 300 were all THD movies though, and they did "appear" to sound better to me. And when I switched back and forth between the THD and PCM soundtracks (on the movies, not the player), there was a noticeable difference to be imediately comparable. But I guess the THD should sound better than the PCM tracks anyway?

The other movies I tried were all DTS HDMA:
Kingdom of Heaven
Flyboys
Behind Enemy Lines
Live Free or Die Hard
X-Men The Last Stand

Now as these DTS HDMA movies sounded so impressive, I would say all the more that all PS3 owners should be banging on SONY's doors demanding an answer = will the PS3 do the DTS HDMA or not? And will the PS3 get bitstreaming or not. Cause if not, then there will be some unrest, because upon looking at my collection as it is now (and I have quite a few already), I only found 5 were THD, 10 were listed as just PCM, and all the rest were DTS HDMA. That is not a good future ratio if the PS3 never gets the DTS.

Again though, pardon me for my exuberance and not as detailed original post.

it has already been confirmed that the PS3 will NOT be able to bitstream dts-HD MA since the hardward won't support it... but I will settle for internal decoding at this point, I just wish they would hurry up with it already.
