Default Watchmen Blu Ray - Directors Cut - 205 Minutes!

Zack Snyder is preparing two extended cuts for the DVD/Blu-ray release. The theatrical cut - which you'll be seeing in less than three weeks! - clocks in at 156 minutes. The Director's Cut will run 190 minutes. And then there will be a cut splicing in "Tales of the Black Freighter" that will run a whopping 205 minutes. Wow.

Source : http://www.collider.com/entertainmen...d/10993/tcid/1

Update:

Collider: What is the final running time on the DVD and what can fans look forward to?

Zack: The final running time without the Black Freighter is 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Collider: When you say the Black Freighter, so you’re going to put in some of the animated bits?

Zack: No. The Black Freighter version of the movie, which we call the final cut or the ultimate cut – it has a marketed name that I don’t know exactly what it is. That version of the movie, because when we were up there we physically shot the in’s and out’s, scenes at the newsstand that go into the movie. There’s like scenes where our characters pass the newsstand and then we pick up action at the newsstand and it gets us into the Black Freighter….with shots that go into it and it comes to life and you follow the Black Freighter story and then come back into the movie. That version of the movie is the director’s cut with the Black Freighter intercut. That version sort of traces the structure of the Black Freighter that's integrated into the comic book… So that version is the 3 hour and 25 minute version. So you have all those in’s and out’s…but the director’s cut includes the Hollis death stuff, that’s just a lot more connective tissue…it’s hard for me to even remember exactly what’s in it. But it’s just a lot more.

Collider: So let me ask you, is there footage that isn’t going in this director’s cut that’s sitting on the sidelines…or is this really everything?

Zack: It’s really pretty much everything. The 3 hour version is pretty much everything. There was very little that we shot that I didn’t like or use.

Here’s what Debbie said:

Collider: What is coming on the DVD? Is there a director’s cut? A separate theatrical cut?

Debbie Snyder: They’re all done because we had to finish them all at the same time. We have the 3 hour director’s cut which will be released at the first release of the DVD…which will probably be around Comic-Con of this year.

Collider: Can I ask you, is there going to be a theatrical cut and a director’s cut on the same DVD or are these separate DVDs?

Debbie: I think on one of them, I don’t know if it’s the Blu-ray, I think it does exist together. But don’t hold me to it. We also did the craziest thing ever called “The In-Movie Experience” for Blu-ray which I’ve never seen before…where Zack actually…it’s like a director’s commentary but it’s him and there are all these boxes and they’ll play the movie and he’ll point to a scene and they’ll deconstruct the scene on all these monitors behind him where you can see the green screen version of it. Or if it’s Dr. Manhattan you can see some great effects. It’s kind of like “Minority Report” as it feels very futuristic. And then there will be, I believe, in the fall the Ultimate Watchmen cut which will have the Black Freighter thread through the film which includes the ins and outs that we shot at the newsstand so that’s pretty fun. And another thing is we finished all the versions and it was an enormous amount of money because of Dr. Manhattan. Because if you think about it, it was an hour difference between the theatrical version, so it’s a lot of visual effects on Dr. Manhattan and we finished it at the same quality so we were really excited that they let us do that.

205 minutes? That must be some kind of record! I was already planning to pick this up (and 156 minutes was pretty long already) ... now, I can't wait for the blu to be released! I just hope the additional footage will add to the story and not slow down the pacing too much.

LOTR: Return of the King comes in at a hefty 251 minutes!

Even though I don't know anything about Watchmen, the trailers seems interesting. I'm thinking of catching this on IMAX. If it's good, I like the idea of having the extended cuts. This is how movies should be when they are set for Blu.

I like to get my movies complete without missing parts deleted for time's sake. Hope the studios keep this in mind when they release their movies.

Heck yes! That is awesome. I will definitely hold off for the 205 minute one. Hopefully there will also be a ton of special features on the disc as well.

The Watchmen are based on Charlton Comics characters, which DC Comics aquired in 1985. Alan Moore had originally wanted to use the exact characters themselves, but when DC found out that many of them would be killed or rendered unusable after the story was over, they suggested using original creations.

Believe it or not, Nite Owl is based on Blue Beetle rather than Batman.

As long as you're going into that, The Black Freighter section comics that the kid was reading is based off the old horror tales of EC Comics of the '50s. Great stuff.

Can you say Tales From the Crypt? I thought you could.

FYI: Black Freighter 720p trailer up:

Actually, two Nite Owls were based on two Blue Beetles. Rorschach is based on The Question, The Comedian on The Peacemaker, Dr. Manhattan on Captain Atom, and Ozymandias on Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt.

I just hope Warner have their encoding game down pat when it comes time to release Watchmen. Fingers crossed.

I'm seeing the movie again in 14 hours, just so you can hate me more.

If not, I read that Paramount is releasing it in the UK.

Awesome! I already can't wait for the theatrical version and now I am anticipating the bluray release before the movie is even in theatres.

Oh well, the bluray will definitely be a day 1 purchase for me.

The total runtime for Tales From the Black Freighter is 62 minutes, so obviously they won't be splicing the entire film into this cut of Watchmen.

I guess they will be splicing scenes from TRTBF that were included in the original graphic novel.

So I'm left wondering if they will also include the full TFTBF in the Watchmen's Blu-ray realease as an extra?

I'm going to hold off on getting anything WATCHMEN related until the end of the year with what will probably be a massive Blu-Ray that throws in the kitchen sink as well. I MAY get the complete Motion Comic if it's not included in the big massive Blu-Ray of it.

But I'm glad to hear that even with the theatrical cut that it delivers on what we're hoping for it to be. It's nice to know that me taking the day off to go see it will be worth it.

Anyone else taking the day off as well? And the day before, I'm going to bring in an ice cream cake that has the smiley face with blood logo on it into work for everyone.

Actually, the entire running time for TFTBF is more like 25mins and Hollis Mason's: Under the Hood is 35. You can read it off the jacket art on the net if you can find it.

Seeing as he said he's using all the parts he thought was good to begin with, I doubt he'd even bother including the full cut as an incentive and a bonus (and a way not to piss those off) to those consumers who purchased the standalone release earlier.
