Default What's with the Sticky Cases?

Am I the only one who finds the edges of the case remain sticky with adhesive after removing the "security" seals? Is there some secret to removing them I am unaware of--because this has not been an issue with DVDs (although it is pain). I have tried to rub off the adhesive, but it tears the plastic cover.

I am very unhappy to pay a premium for a movie and finding my fingers sticky and that the case sticks to the table and the cases to each other. What is with the people that make this stuff?

Any chance this will be corrected before I am completely put off?

PS: I looked for a thread on this subject and did not really find one.

There are several threads on this topic, but what I normally do is this ...

I have a roll of that wide, clear, USPS / 3M packing tape. I cut off a strip about 4 inches long, and stick that on the sticky residue. I than pull it off and repeat, until all the residue is gone. This may take a little bit of patience depending on how much you have to clean off, but it works every time and leaves your case in tip-top condition.

I tried using nailpolish remover once, as well as some other chemicals, but it only made thinigs worse or made the plastic cover somewhat cloudy looking.

Thanks for the response.

This really should not be necessary, should it. Is there enough of a stink going anywhere to get anyone's attention?

Just dip a q-tip in some ethanol or isopropanol, which you can get at any drugstore, and that will rub off the adhesive quickly.

Isopropyl Alcohol is what I use too, always have at least three bottles of it at home since I use it to clean off computer parts. Make sure you get like 99% and take out the paper insert before using and take a q-tip and it will come right off.

There is also a product called Goo Gone. Most drug stores and Wal Marts carry this and it works really well. You can get one in a spray bottle. Just spray some onto a paper towel and wipe the resdiue until gone. Should work just fine.

Lighter fluid works well, and is safe. Some products will eat plastic!

Just don't smoke anything at the same time.

Using the discarded plastic pieces with the sticky adhesive on it works sometimes. I hate that stuff too.

Remove the stickers?
I use a razor-knife and just cut it so the case will open.
I never remove the sticker.

My cases are fine - stickers and all!

I agree i just cut or use my nail to break the seal but i agree don't need 2 or 3 sealing the cases

As in my previous post on this subject:

Use gas. Dip the entire case in gas. Guaranteed not to have any residue!!!

...ethanol being the alcohol type in whiskey, vodka, etc. - so kick back w/ some Jack Daniels & a couple of Qtips, and kill two birds w/one stone. Plus, your collection will smell like whiskey, which can't be all bad.

Razor blade carefully slid through the opening works well. Don't slide it all the way to the end, you can tear off the remainder and use it as a tab to pull off the sticker.

I use goo gone, which was already mentioned. I have used rubbing alcohol but it can make plastic look hazy/cloudy.

I think I may have found the way to remove the sticker with the least amount of residue. After many recent purchases I have experimented with different ways of removing the stickers. The one way I found as to only leave a little bit of sticky residue is by this way.

Take your fingernail on the edge of the sticker, right on the rounded edge on the sides and peel up both corners of the sticker only enough so you can get a hold of the sticker from the side (meaning the seam where the case opens). Peel is straight down and you won't have but a small bit of residue where you peeled up the corners of the sticker. I hope this helps, I know that sticky stuff is annoying.

I am glad that this forum allows one to blow off steam regarding these stupid sickers.
This issue is the first thing that I noticed when I started getting BD's.
I started to notice this same issue on CD's.
But when a sticker, even the title sticker from the top of the disc box, takes off part of the "chrome" from the BD trademark, it is time for the industry to come up with something different.

Watch a movie after removing:
1. card board sleeve (Pirates)
2. Shrink wrap
3. security stickers side, and bottom
4. Title sticker from top

To find that there is an insert card with a security device, and a black sticky security device inside.

Stop using the stupid stickers

I had laid out my complaints in another thread, but will add to this one to keep the anger going.

I got home with my brand new player and hooked it up.

Then the real battle started -- attempting to remove security stickers from three sides of the movies I bought, after already removing the cellophane enclosure. But that was not the end of it. The adhesive remained, sticking the case to me, the table, each other.

Following another thread, I bought some water based Goof Off -- TOXIC stuff mind you -- and have started the tedious process of removing the adhesive from the boxes. Like I should have to do this!!! Nonetheless, the plastic is ripped and pulled where I previously fought to remove these things.

THEN, there are the devices inside. The oblong ones will stay. But why are they putting non-removable square patches on top of the INDEX page so you can't read it?!?! Are they incompetent or do they simply not care? You can bet its the latter.

Sony and its partners are needlessly upsetting the people who will make or break this medium -- and it will have an economic impact on them if it fails.

I suggest they get their act together and FIX this thing, and NOW not a year from now.

To the first poster -- no, you (and all of us) as the consumer who paid a premium for the movie and container are right to be upset.

Yeah, these bastards - they used to be on white cards you could just pull out and toss. This is the only one I could not get off completely. Apocalypto had one and AMAZINGLY, I got it all off with no residue. Its starting to piss me off.
