The 1984 Extended TV version of Dune DVD is relatively cheap on Amazon right now and I had a hankering to watch it while up at my mom’s home.

It’s the Australian release and is USA compatible, a barcode sticker covers up the Region 4 info. I’m guessing a handful was made for Region 1 but they did not want to spend the expense with new back artwork. The seller answered my email and said the DVD would play in the US.

I noticed that Princess Irulan is basically cut out of the extended version.

If I could make a cut, I’d start out with the extended storyboard narration of the machines and the history prior to House Atreides going to Dune. Then I’d insert the Princess Irulan part but use all of her deleted monologue scenes (more Virginia Madsen the better) you could include all of the scenes from the extended version and deleted scenes from the theatrical bonus materials.

The deleted scene of Paul’s hand in the box was so David Lynch, reminded me of Twin Peaks.

But here’s the most important addition for the ending, putting in the Thufir scene and then Paul proclaiming himself being emperor with Irulan and Chani. Such emotional scenes should have been in the theatrical.

The deleted Thufir, Irulan and Chani ending is better than anything in the new Dune.

Also little Alia taunting the emperor and having her way with Baron Harkonen is also a great and creepy scene.

Apparently scenes were filmed of Alia stabbing dead or dying Sardaukar troops. I think we see just the very end of this in the film. I wonder what else was shot that nothing, not even a still, has leaked of?

That's because in the novels
[Show spoiler] a guild navigator
doesn't show up till the second book, Dune Messiah. So that's something to look forward to in the third Dune movie by Villeneuve.
[Show spoiler]They aren't described to look as grotesque as the Lynch version though, they look kind of the opposite and the TV series comes closer.

Anyone know of a more detailed review or video about the Via Vision release? I found a couple on Youtube but they don't really go into much detail about the extended cut. Both show off the Via Vision release well, I was just hoping for some more information.

Terror & Tats, says he's impressed with how good the TV cut looks.

Mondo Chelloveck Movies probably has the first video up about Via Vision's limited edition

1. We need caps of the extended cut. Preferably an A/B comparison with the old DVD.

2. Has anyone heard anything more about the rumored two-tape, four-hour VHS? I keep looking, keep finding nothing.

The first time I saw DUNE in full, it was the Alan Smithee TV cut (on the Disney Channel). That was around 1997 or 1998. Not long after and wanting to watch DUNE again I looked for it at Blockbuster where I found a 2 VHS set for rent, the box was the standard cover art in a 2 VHS paper cover/case except at the top was a yellow band that said "Extended Cut" in black letters. At the time, I had learned via the Internet about the Alan Smithee cut and the theatrical cut of DUNE and assumed this was the Alan Smithee cut.

This VHS rental version was largely the same as the Alan Smithee cut but with some more and/or alternate versions of scenes. As I more clearly recall, Paul's and Jessica's ornithoper escape after the crash ran a little longer as well as their arrival at sietch Tabr running longer with more post-fight with Jamis scenes.

Over the years, I sometimes wish I had thought to go back to Blockbuster to try and buy that 2 VHS copy of DUNE when Blockbuster was shifting over to DVDs.

I was trying to find more information on this cut of DUNE a couple weeks ago, hoping to find a picture of the box at least. I've assumed for awhile now that this 2 VHS version was a version offered to movie rental shops rather than being a general release because the normal VHS is easily findable online. In my searching I came across a thread I had not seen before on the r/Dune subreddit, user themoviemaestro asks about the Alan Smithee cut as well as if anyone had any details on the cut reported to air on KTVU in 1992. User deadduncanidaho would respond with more details than I've seen about the 2 VHS cut than I've found in years.

Now that i am familiar with the dates and versions I can tell you some info about the 92 version. Sometime around 93-94 I was given a box of movies from a closed video store employee. So these tapes were second generation copies, but still good quality. In that box had an alt cut of Blade Runner and alt cut of Dune. The dune was most certainly the 92 version. It had the Irulan intro but included more scenes. I am not 100% sure that it had the paul-jamis fight. But I know there was the fremstill scene was there, jamis' children, and maybe harah. Certainly nothing was in there that is not part of spicediver edit. (if you have not seen it, it's a good watch. some of the edits in spicediver correct the plot and its hardly noticeable.)

On a personal side, I watched that cut way too many times. I worked nights at the time and there was not much to do after work so i would pop the tape in watch half, go to sleep, and watch the other half the next day. Then the next rewind the tape and start over.
Deadduncanidaho's descriptions jogged my memory a bit and what he described seems right to me. Now that I think about it, the intro not being the Alan Smithee one was probably what first surprised me to the difference Maybe there was a little more in the 2 VHS but not enough to be significantly different.

I don't remember if the 2 VHS version was 4 hours, I want to say it wasn't and that somewhere along the line reports of David Lynch's 4 hour cut were conflated with the double VHS.

A few years back I saw a VHS set of Dune at a thrift store that I assumed to be a former rental store copy and didn’t grab it. But not long after I saw talk online similar to what you’re saying so I went back for that and of course it was gone.

I should have remembered the mantra I learned from the old laserdisc collectors which was basically “if you see it, buy it”.

I wonder if this VHS version is closer to what Lynch intended for the extended version. He specifically mentions releasing a longer cut on VHS back in the 80s before the Smithee version appeared. It would make sense that he would be so bitter about that cut if he had already started preliminary work on his own extended cut.

Since I don't have the DVD with the extended cut, I went ahead and ordered a copy through Deep Discount as Via Vision says it is limited to 3000 copies. DD currently has a code, OCTAVIA, for 10% off orders of $40 or more good through June 07 and Noon Central time. The DUNE Via Vision release is in stock and $56.97 currently.

Grindhouse video still has some copies in stock too at $50. DiabolikDVD had the lowest price at $45 but they are currently sold out. With this being a limited release, there is no telling if anyone will be getting a restock.

What's maddening about the tape is that there's not even a picture online. There's no catalog number. There's no hard info. There's literally nothing.

We're literally chasing a release that all hard evidence and 99% of people say doesn't exist.

I received my copy of the ViaVision release and the discs play fine on a region A player.

The Sleeper Must Awaken extended cut was nice to see, it has been a while since I last watched it so nothing stood outright as new but still a great documentary that has had a tumultuous release. No on camera interviews.

Only gave a brief watch of the Extended TV edit with the commentary which is interesting thus far and look forward to watching the rest of the film with it on.

Cannot speak to whether the video quality is all that much different from the Koch release.

The audio for the commentary is mono with Dolby Surround decoding, switching to stereo makes it more intelligible.

The bonus disc also includes a previously lost scene with Harah, Jessica, and Alia.
Which was restored recently.
Rather surprised that this has not been really acknowledge but a nice inclusion.

Shame that no one has ever been able to unearth the various known deleted scenes and transfer them at a higher quality than the sub optimal SD versions that are scattered about.

For those that have the Arrow set and want the TV Edit and The Sleeper Must Awaken documentary then best pick up the ViaVision set before its all gone.

Okay…so it is region-free and will play fine on my region A player?

That’s good to know, as I was thinking about picking this up and wanted to make sure it’s region-free before doing so.

Yes, all three discs play just fine on my stock Region A Oppo 203.

Picked up my copy from Grindhouse.

He has tried to track down the footage as he had an idea to compile a `Hearts of Darkness` style documentary, but the official word is that Universal deleted all the tapes pretty much as soon as it became clear that the movie wasn`t going to be a money spinner.
It appears that other than the brief `welcome to the convention` snippet eveything is lost. Seems as though Ed Naha used the tapes as the basis of his `Making of Dune` book but that`s all that ever happened with them.
Come the revolution there`s a spot on the wall reserved for whichever exec made that decision.

On the commentary for Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Amy Heckerling mentions that Universal did a big sweep of eliminating unused materials for their films circa 1985

Does this movie have any foreign/alien languages that require subtitles? I just picked up the Plaion 2023 release and it just dawned on me it only has German subs.
I have the same question regarding a few movies, for example Lost Highway (2018 ArtHaus). Is there an easy way to find out if movies have any foreign sections?
