So how about:

November: Science Fiction
December: ?
January: Top Action Films
February: Top Films of 2009

The reason I have Top Films of 2009 in February is because some of the best films of the year only get a limited release in December and aren't released nationwide until January. As was the case last year with Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, Milk and countless others. So I would like to give the chance for everyone to catch up. Plus, that's when the Academy Award nominees are announced.

I would also like to do a Top Actors and Film Directors at some point. But for December: Comedy or Drama?
One suggestion Romulus: count all LOTR as one, as with the book. I know other ranking lists have done this, and it alleviates your concerns above.

I'd say Drama for December. I also have not much respect for comedies, apart for Monty Python, Peter Sellers, Steve Martin and Bill Murray. Comedies today make me cry, not laugh.

i've already said why I think Blair Witch is scarier than Exorcist: for the same reason that the sound of a monster in the woods is scarier than the image of the monster in the woods. my mind doesnt need any help in creating an image that will always be more terrifying than any image you put on a screen. of course, you're free to say "you're wrong," but that's just us agreeing to disagree

Blair Witch was a laugh fest....

What about Bladerunner , 2001 A Space Odyssey ,Planet of the Apes, Terminator or even Alien - dont automatically assume Star Wars will win - they are great films make no mistake , but are they really the greatest

For someone who works in the backcountry, Blair Witch spooked the crap out of me. The non visual is the scariest - noises coming out of the dark, walking all day on a bearing and ending up in a circle (real nightmare material), and messing with the tent. Terifying! That being said I haven't watched it in a while and wonder if it still has the same impact or if it is a first experience movie.

It also set the style for Quarantine and Cloverfield.

What about a best animated movies list? And I second the idea of doing best holiday movies for December.

That December slot seems perfect for holiday films.
I find most dumb and they go for cheap laughs and shock value. The people in them generally can't act. There's almost no story or anything to care about. Just not my kind of thing.

yea i agree.. i dont live in the sticks but i def. live in a woodsy area.... a guy i worked with got a directors cut copy of the movie when it just went into theatres... watched it at my house with a crowd of people and we all went camping out in the woods a few miles back. Was pretty damn creepy and def. made that movie memorable for us. We heard coyotes howling that sounded like girls screaming ha. it was kinda bugged out....

Please don't forget Top WAR movies and WESTERNS for sometime next year. And I agree with a previous poster - it is not a sure thing that a Star Wars
movie(s) will end up having the most votes in the SciFi category.

Dont worry I definitely have Top War and Westerns on the list. I'll spread these out over a long period of time because I dont want these lists to wear out their welcome. I'll definitely want to spend some time here discussing films but I just haven't had the time to do so. I'm glad to see a lot of interesting discussions go on here.

The good thing about these lists is discovering some of the things lower down the rankings. Or a few that some people rank highly, but most have never seen. It's an opportunity to discover new things that we might like, and to possibly introduce other people to something they have missed.

I don't care that The Exorcist is ranked No. 1, but I might check out a few I have never seen such as The Ring.

The same is true for some of the other genres. Except comedy

War would be excellent as there are so so many excellent ones to chose from.

Perhaps at some time you could do a "tear-jerker" one. I think a well rounded assortment of genres would get included in that.

vehemently disagree here. For example, look at the 2008 AFI Top 10 Sci-Fi of all-time (just an example, but an indicator of the quality of the genre)

1 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
2 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope 1977 20th Century Fox
3 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982 Universal Studios
4 A Clockwork Orange 1971 Warner Bros.
5 The Day the Earth Stood Still 1951 20th Century Fox
6 Blade Runner 1982 Warner Bros.
7 Alien 1979 20th Century Fox
8 Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991 TriStar Pictures
9 Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1956 Allied Artists Pictures Corporation
10 Back to the Future 1985 Universal Studios

I saw the “Blair Witch Project” for the first time ever earlier this week. I’m sure that back in the day, when it was marketed as a real-life documentary, it must have been creepy as heck. But now that I know it’s all fake, I hated it more than anything. They spent half the movie screaming their lungs off at each other; I didn’t like any of these characters. Everything is obviously staged. Didn’t get the ending. I actually prefer “[REC]” and “Quarantine” over this (though I think I hate “Cloverfield” more than “Blair Witch”).

I’d suggest splitting sci-fi and fantasy into two distinct genres. “LOTR” is pure epic fantasy, but has nothing sci-fi in it at all. Only a few movies (like “Krull”) truly encompass both genres; it could be up to you to say which ones count and which ones don’t as you did with the horror/sci-fi/action films on this list.

Either way, any list will be fun to do. Sci-fi is my favorite genre, with action coming second (now will action include gangster flicks, crime and police dramas, and the like?). Dramas and comedies are alright. I would also be interested in seeing a list for historical epics and martial arts movies.

I’d request dramas for December. If for no other reason, it’s too cold and dark to think about bright happy comedies.

Yes, "Star Wars" may be a top favorite for most people, but it's not the best. It's a flawed masterpiece of sorts, ripped off...er...I mean inspired by various other films and things that Lucas was into. If it's another favorites list, "Star Wars" might be number one, but on a best-of list, it shouldn't be.

We might even surprise ourselves.

Romulus.

Maybe you could do a list of great football movies in January around the time for the Super Bowl and a list of great baseball movies in April for the start of their season.

And best of all, I would LOVE to see a list of great WAR movies. Everybody loves war movies. I think.

Thanks again for all your hard work.
