I recognized more than 40 years ago that a single-play system is the only way to go. How you ask, when digital was yet to be invented for the masses and vinyl, reel-to-reel and cassette were the only audio playback devices? (Don't get me going on 8-track....LOL)

We had one of those massive furniture audio consoles in our house, of which the centrepiece was the "record changer". You'd stack up 2-3-4-5 LP's and let them play in order. I knew almost immediately that there was no way you could get a proper interprepretation of the music in this manner, but it sure was convenient.

Recognizing this I made sure my first turntable was a "record player" and NOT a "record changer". I haven't looked back and I don't intend to either. If you want 24 hours of music, connect your PC to your HT. Leave the playing of physical media to single-only players.

To each his own. My 100 disc CD changer sounds better than any other standalone CD player, DVD player, gaming console, etc that I've owned*. And I get the value-added benefit of my physical media's life being extended because it's not subjected to being handled and moved between players and cases, which by extension keeps the instances for scratches and damage to a bare minimum.

*I will stipulate that I haven't had a chance to try out a CD on my Oppo yet, and the Oppo is considered to be very good in the audio department.

Much of the enjoyment of listening to music comes from the interaction between the media and person. Once you take this away all you're doing is playing music....you're not really listening. JMHO of course!

Try it next time Paul!.

I'll give you an example. I'm feeling really upbeat and full of piss & vinegar as they say, so I decided I wanted to play some music this morning. One of the albums I always turn to when I feel like that is David Bowie's "Young Americans". I could have opened up my MediaMonkey and have it play through my PC, but I wanted to hear some music. So I cued up the vinyl and started playing it. I stood back and just listened! Fingers snapping and toes tapping and trying to sing along (good thing I live alone). LOL! This expereince can't remotely compared to a track coming from my PC. I wasn't just playing...I was listening! I was getting INVOLVED!

You do have a point...I seldom stop and listen to music anymore. Usually it is kinda like a theme song...it's just playing in the background while I'm doing something mundane. I've got to try out the Oppo's CD playback ability this weekend. Thanks for reminding me! Oh, I'll have to run some RCA cables to it because it's only hooked up via HDMI right now.

The OPPO BDP-83 is a wonderful CD player and the annalog connection will give you a slightly different playback experience as opposed to HDMI. Play around with both and see which one you prefer. Then bring out some CD's you love and get into the groove! You'll have fun...I guarentee it!

I remember those days quite fondly as my introduction to Hi-Fi . My father had one of those pieces of furniture when I was a child growing up. For some reason I believe it was a zenith (I'll have to look at the photo's) with the turntable mounted on a slide out drawer in the center between the 2 speakers. The Tuner was mounted on the top under a lift up panel. He then upgraded to a Harman/Kardon consolette which had an AM/FM tuner and integrated Garrard changer all in a sleek wood cabinet w/matching Harman 2 way speakers.

I fully understand where you're coming from (I share alot of those positions), hence the ownership of separates. But I believe the record players had their problems, but with the CD players of today the mechanical issues aren't as imposing on the sonic quality.

Yeah I've been going through a great deal recently & have been checking out the threads as a sort of therapy. I'll be heading back to work tomorrow. So I'll be on from 3:30-4am till about 6 am whilst getting ready for work. Than later in the afternoon when I return.
