I for one would much rather have the Chinatown BD as back-up to the UHD, especially if made from the remaster.

Did the Blu-ray not have the original mono? There's a 2.0 mono track on the disc AFAIK.

I would rather it just include a Chinatown BD also. I already have Two Jakes on Blu-ray, so it will be redundant and obviously the same old disc. If it were a 4K UHD also, now that would be great. I guess it's still good for people who don't already own it, and it is a good film... but hardly a bona fide classic like Chinatown.

Thank you so much for this. When I saw this in theaters last week (I believe it was the 4K restoration DCP as part of some Regal Cinemas event), the gunshots in that first scene in the YouTube link instantly clicked with me and I knew which mix is which.

The DCP ended up showing the 5.1 mix. It was a weird mix because so much of it sounded like mono but those gunshots as mentioned sounded a little off to me when I was watching it.

The US BD had the original yes, the European/UK disks however did not

We all probably have Chinatown on BD too though, just swap discs and bobs your uncle.

I'm really wondering what the actual "front" artwork of the inner case will be. All Chinatown, or with Two Jakes on the back? You just really can't tell in the pre-release images one way or the other.

But that might be a good idea to do exactly that in the end. I'll just be stuck with 2 Two Jakes.

The Two Jakes is pretty mediocre. I'll probably give it another watch, but it's so forgettable that the only thing I remember about it was there being a laughably bad

Sure, "The Two Jakes" is certainly not even in the ballpark when it comes to the greatness of "Chinatown", but I don't think it's as terrible as some might lead you to believe. Especially considering how movies have gotten considerably worse in the last decade. Just by default "The Two Jakes" looks pretty good now by comparison. So if you view it in that context it ain't so bad.

But I'm a big Nicholson fan and I love the cast in "Jakes" so if you can adjust your expectations appropriately, for me it's fun to spend just a little more time in the cinematic world of "Chinatown." Really wish somebody would do a documentary on the making of both these films. I mean at one point Cannon was trying to do the sequel, Robert Evans was wanting to play "Jake" in the film and in the end it really soured the relationships between Evans, Towne and Nicholson. Just fascinating stuff looking back.

Man, I remember my dad being so excited to see the sequel to Chinatown, a movie he loved dearly. When he saw it and I asked him how it was he said, "Well...it kinda sucked".

I still laugh to this day remembering that.

At first I thought it didn’t have the mono track, but looks like it does. It doesn’t state “Restored Mono TrueHD” on the UHD specs though, looks like it’s just a Dolby Digital 2.0 track. Could be an error on the case though
