Default Need for Speed: Now being developed by Criterion

Didnt see a thread for this. Not liking this at all. EA is taking Criterion, which makes Burnout, and having them work on the next NFS game. Im sure they will turn out a great product, but Id rather them do another Burnout game then stuck with that series. I think its best to have 2 different developers on the 2 different racing franchises to keep them distinct and preserve their own unique personality and feel

Quote:
As for the other announcement, Criterion Games, the famed developer behind the Burnout series, will indeed be making the next Need for Speed title.

"We've taken the Burnout team and combined it with our Need For Speed franchise," added Pleasants. "So we now have that in our favor because that Burnout team is probably one of the more online-centric and notably high-quality game developers that we have out at Criterion."

Well the Criterion team already talked about not coming out with another burnout release, but just simply creating special DLC for it (like new islands with new objectives, cars, races, etc). I think THAT is a great idea. Surely it's a lot cheaper for them, instead of paying to produce discs and artwork and cases and then have them shipped.

They can just create the DLC, and have it released through the PSN.

I do agree with the idea of keeping them separate though

How much of a seller is the NFS name these days? Hasnt Burnout surpassed in popularity? Wouldnt it make more sense for EA to get Criterion to make another Burnout game instead of pulling them away and having them work on series thats been going downhill? Its been quite sometime since Burnout Paraidse was released (Jan 08). If they start developing now, they could released a sequel by late next year which will have spaced the games 2 1/2 to 3 years apart.

refer back to my post. Criterion has expressed interest in NOT releasing a sequel, but instead concentrating on providing extensive addons for the series. They can basically release what is ESSENTIALLY another game via DLC like they're doing now with Big Surf Island.

They can keep coming out with new islands every six months or so, and keep the game up to date. (this last part is just my thoughts, nothing that was said by Criterion)

I'm with you Havok. I'm sure a Criterion made NFS game will be decent, but I'd rather them not be attached to NFS.

So basically, as a NFS fan, I'm excited. As a Burnout fan, I'm not.

Along what Dreaming in Blu said though. They really don't need to make another Burnout game this generation. I'd be more than happy just to keep buying DLC for Paradise.

except they are not coming out with a new island every 6 months. Its taking them much longer than that. Look at how long it took for Big Surf Island after it was announcend? Id imagine that the stream of DLC (specifically new areas) will slow them with them working on rebooting the Need For Speed series

But we don't need DLC every 6 months. The game has been out for over a year now and people are still enjoying it even without the DLC. As long as they keep on releasing any kind of content for Paradise, I don't think we'll need another Burnout game this generation.

There BETTER be a new Burnout game this gen. I have 101% on bikes and 102% on cars. I'm sure everything on the island can be conquered in less than 2 days of casual play time (meaning people with work and/or school).

yeah but how many of those people would still be playing if they didnt know any content was coming ?? some people just continue to play a game that they would otherwise be done with knowing some content is coming and they dont want to get "worse" at the game while waiting ..

Exclamation New NFS

I can see why some people are concerned about NFS suddenly getting that Burnout feel to it. NFS is an entirely different type of racer. Still, based on the referenced comments from EA, I believe the Burnout team will simply be sharing their knowledge of online gameplay with the NFS team. As they noted, the Burnout team has JOINED WITH the NFS team. So we will see how it goes.

I just hope they add split-screen (at least 2-player) for local multi-player matches. That's something every racing game should have, in my opinion. Online is definitely a requirement nowadays, but the joy experienced from split-screen matches with a buddy chilling on the couch, cannot be replicated.

Well I'd rather Criterion concentrated on a new, full game which I would be willing to spend £30-£40 on then the rip-off DLC we've been getting that I have no desire to spend my money on. Might buy the Island though , but I'll wait to see what others on here think of it first.

I like NFS games so I would welcome a new (good) one.

Though I will admit, I think I'd be much happier if they were working on Black II instead of a NFS game

The way I read the article was that it was only the Burnout Team at Criterion working on the new NFS game. I'm not too familar with how large the studio is, but to me it sounded like it was possible part of Criterion is working on something else.

That could just be more wishful thinking on my part though.
