Quote:
THE PLANNED Deadpool spin-off, featuring Ryan Reynolds' sword-wielding character from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is to be a reboot, says producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

Comic book fans were not entirely happy with the way the character was portrayed at the end of Wolverine when Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson, was given additional powers including implanted arm blades, the eye-blasts of Cyclops and the teleportation ability of Wraith.

Reynolds has always maintained this version was more 'the creature that becomes Deadpool' and still allowed the opportunity to expand and evolve the so-called merc with a mouth in the proposed spin-off.
Asked about the solo movie, Donner told IGN: "We'd kind of reboot it and make it the Deadpool that's in the comics."

And she confirmed Ryan Reynolds would play the role again: "Yes, he would [return for it]. I'd like to see Deadpool, so we'll see where we are moving forward on that. I'm hoping to make a movie out of Deadpool."

There was some worry when Reynolds signed on to play DC Comics hero Green Lantern in the Warner Bros film, with cries of 'traitor' from rabid fanboys. But, as I reported earlier, Donner had said in another interview there should be no issue with the actor playing both roles: "I think you can do different characters. We've had different Bonds, right? And I think if Harrison Ford can be in Indiana Jones and he can be in the Tom Clancy movies, I think if you are a good actor you become the character and it's all right."

The comic book version is a masked anti-hero known for his wisecracks, pop-culture references and also for 'breaking the fourth wall' (addressing the reader directly). The comics actually mention Ryan Reynolds by name so it's always seemed inevitable that the actor would play the part.

Donner also confirmed that the recent Marvel/Disney deal would not affect the status of Marvel's X-Men characters whose film rights are with 20th Century Fox: "Evidently they carved out the X-Men world and kept that at Fox, and so we're fine."
----------------------------

Not sure if Reynolds would be the highest authority on this as of yet. It is, after all, being made at FOX

Quote:
It’s the dream of every comic-book fan, whether they’ll admit it or not. The chance to become your favorite character, impact his story, and help determine his future.

Now, after years of lobbying for the role and finally being rewarded with a huge opening for his debut in the recent “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds has complete control over the character of Wade Wilson. Recently, he clued us in on some of the characters he expects to see in the “Deadpool” spinoff movie — but, as he told us, the best part of the gig is the hands-on approach that he’s been given in developing it.

“I love it, because I get to be involved,” Reynolds said of his role in the fast-tracked development of a Deadpool spin-off film. “And I’m such a huge fan of the character.”

Currently, Reynolds and the studio are seeking a director and writer(s) for the film, and listening to plenty of ideas about where Wade’s story should go. Fortunately for the die-hard fans, Reynolds has no intention of letting the film stray too far from its comic origins.

“I get to be the authentication police, in a weird way,” grinned Reynolds, who will show his versatility this month in the refreshingly-decent romantic comedy “The Proposal” June 19th. “To their credit — the studio’s credit — they want to make an authentic ‘Deadpool’ movie; they want to make it as close to the source material as possible.”

With that in mind, the actor told us that he and the studio have already agreed to some key terms. “He’s going to be the Merc with the Mouth, [we’re going to give] all those answers that everyone wants,” Reynolds explained. “He’s going to have the scarred-up face, he’s going to be in the suit — and, it’s going to be incredible.”

So, as the actor and his studio begin assembling their team, Reynolds is bringing his “authentication police” skills to finding similar-minded people who can tell the fractured tale of the deadly mutant. “Right now, it’s just a question of trying to figure out what is the spine of the story,” Ryan said of their current discussions. “Who is the villain? What does Wade and/or Deadpool want?”

“And how do you tell that story? Are we going to see flashbacks to his old life, flash-forwards, present-day?” an obviously enthusiastic Reynolds added. “We’re just trying to figure that stuff out.”

Same here. Thanks OP for that bit; not a whole lot of news necessarily but still good to read about it.

I had never heard of Deadpool prior to the Wolverine movie to be quite honest. But I like what he has to say about it thus far. Only time will tell how this works out...

Seems like a lot of people feel that way. I feel like I am the only person who liked the movie; I'll grant that it fell short of expectations and waaaay short of potential but iouuh (that's a mumbled 'I don't know')

If done right is the key issue. Somehow I doubt Ryan Reynolds had much input on Deadpool in Wolverine whereas now he is the moniter according to him.

If you think a Deadpool film should have the same style as an X-men film, I don't think you grasp the character at all.

I just hope they do it right, don't try and make it a generic super-hero film, particularly since the character is nothing of the sort. I want to see an action comedy about a mercenary almost on the level of a spoof; I don't want to see Spider-man but this time with a sword wielding hero instead of a webspinning one. They shouldn't look at this as "Deadpool is the hero, who is the villain?" they need to figure out a way to tell an awesome story without attempting to apply the superhero formula.

I just hope they figure out a way to work it without the terrible things they've applied to the X-men film canon. Make a separate canon if they need to. Don't be tied down by terrible canon... look what Incredible Hulk was able to do by ignoring 2003's Hulk picture.

Maybe Ryan Reynolds is already in character since Deadpool likes to think of himself as a member of X-Men? When you get to know me, you'll find that I can warp my reality to make things fit better.

After receiving the healing factor power, he IS a mutant. Artificially mutated, but mutated nonetheless.

But either way, making him a natural mutant (rather than mutated artificially) is a relatively minor thing. I'd compare it to Spider-man having organic webbing in the films. Not a huge deal.

I hate that spider-man has organic webbing in the films, but you are right, it doesn't stop me from enjoying the movie.

Looking forward to seeing how this Deadpool solo movie turnout out - I love Ryan Reynolds

Cool...I'm looking forward to this movie.

You know, Fox was also rumored to be interested in releasing a Silver Surfer movie. What ever happened to that?

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer happened. Or I should say what didn't happen was it didn't become a huge Box Office success; it made almost $132 million domestically when it cost $130 million to make. Yes it made almost $160 million foreign but it was also not taken too well among audiences or critics.

It looks like Wolverine is a bit more successfull so far in the Box Office so who knows. Maybe the people behind Deadpool are a little more motivated than the people behind the Silver Surfer; we can only hope.

An update of sorts. Looks like they're planning on doing a reboot

Good news. Though it sounds like they have not really moved forward at all.
Thanks!
