Default ps3 is broken? somewhat?

well i just got my 60gig ps3 from a bestbuy private auction website, it was working fine for about 3 hours of play, then it froze..it wouldn't read any of my ps3 games it would just stay loading then not do anything, but then i put in a dvd and bam, it worked, then i tried to put in the game again and this time it worked....only for about 10 minutes then it proceeded to freeze again and the same problem kept re-occurring putting a dvd it then it reads the game for a couple minutes then bam it freezes again. whats wrong!

i dont want to send in to sony because it'll run me 150$ to get it fixed

looks like optical drive problem, id send it to Sony cause it's a 60 gig (BC is nice and all). Otherwise id buy a new one.

If you don't send it back to Sony you can still sell it on ebay where power folders with folding farms will pick it up for around 250-300 to run folding@home on, which it can still probably do.

well seeing how its already out of warranty since i don't have a original receipt, can i pop it open and clean the optical drive myself?

and i did notice that when it doesn't read anything it doesn't make any noise(like spinning the disc)

you can also try cleaning the disc that causes it to freeze. Mine can't seem to handle discs with really smudgey fingerprints on them...

I'm going to ask the obvious question first. Is your PS3 in a enclosed space?

Its not a 360...

Mine is in a completely enclosed place, and is running pretty much all day, every day.

Been doing so since launch.

Mine was in a enclosed space also. Wasn't there for very long when I saw how hot it was getting in there.

It's def the drive, I had the same problem with my 60gb a few months after I got it...it would freeze on BD playback for every disc, it would freeze playing ps3 games but DVDs would playback fine. It needs to go back to sony. I sent mine back to them and they had to send me a brand new one. This problem also has nothing to do with it being in an enclosed space

I've had my 60GB since the first day they came out and I have never truly had problems with it except with putting it in closed spaces, it will heat up and eventually burn your graphics card and you will have to buy a new system so keep it in the open. Now the problem you have my friend also did to and had to send it in but all he had to do is pay for shipping, you dont have the manufactures warranty?

No, its not in a enclosed space, and no i don't have the warranty it didn't come with the original receipt and when i called sony they said i needed it for the warranty otherwise i have to pay 150$

well the way the website works is it sells items that are unsellable because they are missing parts like manuals ethernet cables etc..its from best buy but the company dealtree handles it

i called them and he sent me a email to request a refund, which sucks because i had bought the 60gig ps3 for 200$ and i thought it was a awesome deal i wont be able to find elsewhere

another thing is i hope that they take the return because i cut out the upc bars and sent it in for the 5 free blue ray movie offer

I ran mine in an enclosed space for awhile, then the jet engine cooling fans came on. I think that might be the reason why my first 20GB burned out. Oh well, free replacement

$h!t! Your in a jam, I have 3 of the 60gig Ps3's with not even a hiccup, this sounds like an obvious problem (which "they" new about) it had before you bought it hints the 200$ price tag! I picked a Ps3 up on this site for 190$ & was very lucky it works flawless. I hope you can get it taken care of without having to spend 150$. Hell send it back!! How long have you had it? & what were the conditions of the sale??

i had it for one day, played a game for about 2 hours froze then stopped working, although right now i plugged it back it and its working fine, ill more than likely send it back anyways. and the conditions are that if the item is defective or whatnot i get a refund or replacement(if available) which im crossing my fingers is!

That happened to me 3 times already while watching movies... I just clean the disc and put them back in.

If it did, it wouldn't be a PS now, would it? :P

I changed the location before anything happened to it. I don't care how well engineered the PS3 is, recycling hot air back into the unit has to be counterproductive.
