Default Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon US Subtitles

For anybody who's got the U.S. version of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon today in the bundle pack can you tell me if they are the original subtitles like they were in the DVD version, or are they altered like the U.K.'s blu ray version?

Someone posted a pic of the subs:

And if this is accurate, I am going to have a hard time watching the BD of CTHD. Man, that is horrid.

I wonder if the subtitles have an English accent....

But are they exact same as the U.K. blu ray subtitles or are they the original ones from the US release 2000 DVD that are known to be more poetic?

I believe the US version uses American English whereas the UK uses British English. Other than that, they are probably identical. I don't think Sony are releasing the theatrical subs on any version anywhere. The only way I could imagine seeing them is if enough people complained to Sony and they did what Magnolia did with "Let The Right One In", but that is doubtful at best sadly.

I am not positive. But yes, I was the one that posted that snapshot of my screen playing the Bluray of Crouching Tiger. It was mainly for the other thread with the poll about subtitle positioning.

Default Crouching Tiger stand alone release?

Does anyone know if this blu is going to come out by itself? I've already got the other two, and Crouching Tiger is on my short list of Dvd/blu upgrade musts.

Yes. It will. You can see from the packaging that all they did was take the existing CURSE and HOUSE which have been available for a while, and shrinkwrap them together with the new CROUCHING.

Sony will milk this triple pack to move as many of their existing CURSE and HOUSE discs as they can. When the newness is gone, they'll sell this exact CROUCHING (as it is in this pack) by itself.

The subtitles you're seeing are from the English closed captioning track, hence the positioning over the speaker. CC tracks are "dubtitles", because they're supposed to match what's being said on screen

The disc has the standard english subtitles from the orignal DVD release. just select "English" instead of "English SDH"

I don't think you're really understanding the question. There are two versions of the subtitles out there - two different full translations, neither of which are English SDH tracks. The R1 Superbit, and certain versions of the R2 and R3 DVD, have the theatrical (termed 'poetic' by fans) subtitles, and other releases have had a different version. Both seem to be fairly sound in terms of translation, but the theatrical ones have been 'prettied up' by Ang Lee who said he agonized over every last word. The UK Blu-ray has the newer subtitles, the ones that weren't in the theater and weren't agonized over by Lee.

By all accounts the non-poetic translation, which appears to be what we're getting on this blu-ray release, is still fairly accurate to the Mandarin that's being spoken.

I'm fine with it...

I never knew there were different ones. I saw it in the theater here and had the R3 DVD a week later I'd be interested to know which version is here, I don't have time to go through both right now

From my understanding Ang Lee originally wrote the script for the film in English (original U.S. poetic version). So basically the original U.S. theatrical subtitles are the "true" words and meaning of the movie. The U.K. subtitles might or might not be a more accurate translation of what was being said in Mandarin.

Let me explain. Some foreign languages are easily interpreted differently from the English language. English, compared to some foreign languages, is a very basic and simple language. For example, a word in English has limited meaning compared to a similar word in Russian (I'm Russian so I can use Russian as an example). In Russian there are more ways to describe and express oneself with the language.

I don't know Mandarin, but I imagine that this is somewhat the case. It's difficult to translate word for word in different languages. You'll get many different translations from many different translators. Look how many translations there are of the Art of War by Sun Tzu and the Tao Te Ching. There are dozens of translations of both works. And they are both some of the most recognized pieces of literature out today.

Anyways, has anybody confirmed if the subtitles on the U.S. blu ray are the original subs or the newer UK ones?

I see what you mean, that's definately a question to pass to Penton to ask why they used the different ones. Guess I'll hang onto my R3

I cannot understand why Sony could not have included the theatrical subtitles as another sub track. I doubt it would have taken up much space and would have made everyone happy.

They need to fix a lot of things. With the exception of Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh's characters, they used horrible substitutes for many of the characters' names.

Subtitles vs. Real Transliteration
Sir Te / Bei Le Ye (or even Sir Bei would've been okay)
Jen Yu / Yu Jiaolong
Lo / Luo Xiao Hu
