I was watching The Incredible Hulk today and a thought popped in my head: 2008 for me was the year for summer movies ever that I can think of. We had Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, and The Dark Knight all in one year! This year has been kind of lackluster so far.
So my question for you guys, what was your favorite year for summer movies? |

1993, mostly thanks to Jurassic Park (not the greatest movie ever, but truly amazing at the time). That summer also included such solid fare as The Firm, In the Line of Fire, and The Fugitive. The rest of the year was pretty amazing, too.
1994, thanks to True Lies, Forrest Gump, and The Lion King. Plus, Maverick was a surprise. Despite the MAJOR letdown that was Episode I, 1999 was memorable for The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, (the very rewatchable) The Mummy, Eyes Wide Shut, (the ruefully underappreciated) The Iron Giant, and (dare I say it?) The Blair Witch Project. Recently, 2005 and 2008 were good, for reasons previously mentioned. |

2009 has been kind of disappointing.
Transformers and Terminator were... but Watchmen was good, but that was Spring, and it wasn't a Blockbuster. I wasn't even alive back then, but I look at 1982 and see a huge list of classics. While most of the films were flops thanks to ET, they're cult classics today. 2005 and 2006 were definitely important for film in my opinion. everything was changing. Mainstream audiences were given a true taste a Judd Apatow. The Star Wars Saga had ended. Batman and James Bond, two of pop cultures greatest icons were reborn. Grittier, darker, more emotional. They changed things (for summer movies), forever. We did have fantastic films before 2005, but the majority of our summer blockbusters in the early 2000s, were terrible. We had Kill Bill and The Lord Of The Rings and etc.... but it didn't seem like they were enough to push studios into funding movies that are actually good. Just look at a list of summer blockbusters in 2003 compared to ones in 2008. 2008 was a great year for Blockbusters. The Dark Knight. Iron Man. The Incredible Hulk. Hellboy II. Wall-E. some groundbreaking stuff in the list of 2008 films. Last edited by joenostalgia23; 07-26-2009 at 10:49 AM. |

This year has been awful so far for movies...sorry...The Special effects porn from TF2 and T4 doesn't make them a good movie. Best film of the summer and year so far? UP

As far as box office I think 2008 can definately be argued but in my opinion nothing tops 1994 as far as quality films.
Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Clerks, Lion King, Ace Ventura, Speed, Stargate, True Lies, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, The Crow, Ed Wood, Interview with the Vampire, The Santa Clause, Flintstones, Clear and Present Danger, Heavenly Creatures, Timecop(Van Damme's best), Maverick, Star Trek: Generations, The Client, Wyatt Earp and Four Weddings and a funeral. I actually didn't realize Jim Carrey had 3 huge movies all in the same year.... Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_in_film 1993 was great too of course with Fugitive and Jurassic Park. I think it was 1971......don't quote me on this, but 2 movies come to mind.
Love Story and Duck, You Sucker. It was a great time. I was in love and everything in the world seemed right! We saw both those movies several times! Memories...so wonderful! (Now of course, don't ask me for my opinion) LOL John |
