Default The Photography Thread

So I just ordered my first prosumer digital camera yesterday. For my birthday my wife got me the Canon G10 and it should be here tomorrow. I also have an 8GB Sansdisk III Extreme SDHC card that should be here today.

Here's a pic of the G10:

I'm going to order the lens adapter and a wide angle and fisheye for it. Also a polarizer and lens hood.

Eventually a flash also. Most likely the Canon 270 or a Metz AF-3.

Eventually I will step up to a DSLR but right now this is cheaper since I won't need to invest into multiple lens or accessories.

I do need to by a Gorillapod though. Maybe a wireless remote too.

Can't wait! I'll post pics once I get the camera tomorrow.

The G10 is a great camera. I have an old G2 and it was a very solid point and shoot. My friend who is a really good photographer uses his G10 a lot even though he has a 5D as well. He took an incredible picture at my wedding with his G10 that we have framed and hung in our living room.

I'm just now getting back into photography after recently buying a Canon Rebel Xsi.

Have fun with your new camera.

G10 is a gateway drug to SLRs. hahaha I wish I had snagged one when CC was closing. A pocket-size (relatively) camera would be nice now and then.

Buy the book Understanding Exposure. Now that you have the camera, it will be the best $17-20 you can spend to help you get the most out of the G10, especially since the G10 has an amazing amount of manual control.

Yeah that's one of the main reasons I chose it over an entry level DSLR because I can take this everywhere. I know when I get serious about shooting I'm going to need a SLR but until then this will do.

I know I need to invest in some noise reduction plugins and also Light Room. My wife and I have CS4 but the package was for graphic designers so Light Room wasn't included. I think we have it for CS3 though.

I've heard good things about the XSi. I was so close to pulling the trigger but after seeing shots from the G10 around the web, I couldn't resist.

I have both the Canon G9 and G10. Both are nice and quite capable Prosumer digital cameras capable of professional results when used properly.

I have some excellent photos taken with both the cameras that have or could be englarged to 24" X 30" images by my master printer that I have been using for 14 1/2 years. I have sold copies of these images to the public. I will probably print some of the photos taken with the G10 in Zion NP and other places taken in November next year.

Do you know if he uses software to interpolate the images to print that large? I printed 20"x30" with my A900 (24MP) and was still below 300dpi.

I got the G9 and love it. My next camera is going to be a digital SLR with all the bells and whistles.

ARGH Stupid B&H. I was wondering why the order wasn't done yet so I contacted them and it was stuck in the verification department. It's been cleared up and they will ship it out today. UPS Overnight!

All of our work whether we scan from 35mm to 4" X 5" transparencies or work directly from digital files as in the case of the Canon G9 or G10 is with Photoshop CS4. The files from the digital cameras are in Raw and either worked in Raw or TIF files. But, we print directly to Fuji Crystal Archive Photo paper with a Chromira Digital printer from TIF files from either scanned transparencies or digitally shot images. These machines and Light Jet Printers are available with many Pro labs and Service Bureaus. Output to these machines is normally between 200 and 300 lines per inch, but we adjust the Rez (resolution factor of the machine). It is not an inexpensive means of printing and it is generally more expensive than the general public can or will be willing to pay. All of the digital work costs are distributed amongst a number of prints.

Most people that do their own work print on Ink Jet printers, but most of these will not print to anywhere near the sizes that you or I have suggested.

Other software programs can also be used for the interpolation however.

My wife wants to get an injet we saw that does up to 11X19 and will bleed through. It was on sale for $199.99 at Staples. There were two, one HP and one Epson. I forget the model numbers though.

I might be using something like that to print. Need to look into it a bit more though.

The 1800/1900/2880 (I think) Epsons are nice and I looked at the 13x19 Canon and HP printers. However, I get my stuff printed by a lab. Just the upkeep, calibration, supplies, etc on a printer is more effort that it was worth to me, especially since most of my prints are 11x14" or larger. If I screw up one 11x14 print, then I am out over $1 per screwup. 13x19 paper is typically $2/sheet minimum, and I like some non-gloss papers that would be more.

Rich,
Very interesting. I hadn't done much looking into the pro level type of printing and often wondered how they handled some of the larger prints. I have done 16x20" pretty easily with 12MP with no upscaling, and the 20x30s from the 24MP look great. One of these days I'll get an A900 shot worth printing extra large.

Camera will be here today!!! I got my 8GB Extreme III card yesterday. I also have an extra hi capacity battery coming today.

Next week I will be ordering the lens adapter and a lens hood. Haven't decided yet on the ebay special or if I will get it from Lensmate.

I also want to get the Opteka fisheye.

Haven't decided on a flash yet. Either the 270EX or the Metz AF-3.

Go with the lensmate adapters they are made of aluminum.

http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/G10.html

I went with the one for the 72mm filter thread so that I could use the lens without restriction and put on a 72mm UV filter and use a 72mm polarizing filter. The drawback is the size of the filter and you might want a 72mm lens cap particularly if you leave the adapter on the camera. I do because I use the adapter as a lens hood, however with it in place the camera is heavier and not as compact. I do not think that the Canon 1.4X extender is that useful since it yields a 196mm lens. But, in my case, I have the Canon G9 and the extender for that camera. If you want to use close up capabilities, you may also want the Lensmate 58mm lens thread adapter.

Yeah Macro is one area I'm very interested in. I ordered screen protectors off of Lensmate already. There was a nice lens hood on ebay that I was thinking of getting.

I might end up with the hood on lensmate though. It looks nice too.

The main thing I want to start going for with the camera is learning to do HDR. I want to use that technique for photographing cars.

Also, whats a good small tripod? I was thinking of getting a Gorillapod.

Gorillapod's are awesome, highly recommended. I bought 2, one for my Rebel, the other for my HD Camera.

Played around a bit last night. The noise at higher ISO's isn't too bad for what I will be using the camera for. The placement of the EV is PERFECT.

Manual focusing is sucky though. I don't like using the little wheel for it. The auto focus is good though.

I think the most awesome thing so far is the Image Stabilization!

I could never take focused pictures as those shutter speeds before without a tripod or resting the camera on something. Now it's a piece of cake!

Going on a car run with friends later today and going to take a bunch of photos. Then a party tomorrow for more!

Will try to get something up Sunday or Monday.

What site should I use for photo hosting?
