Default Photography (Choosing a camera)

Me and my girlfriend would like to buy a digital camera, but we don't know that much about what kind of camera to choose and what spec too look for.

The camera will be mostly use for urban exploration, taking picture while haunting/fishing, taking picture of the painting my girlfriend make and she is 3 month and a half pregnant, so it will also be use to take picture of our baby.

So what kind of specs should I look for ? What brand of camera to check out or to avoid ?
My friend told me I should get something with a high digital zoom in case I want to print those picture. But beside that I know nothing more.

The price i'm willing to pay is between 150 and 300$.
I don't want something for a pro, but I don't want something cheap too.
