Arrow Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray

The teaser trailer is out. Click the pic to head over to check the teaser:

Quote:
I've received numerous emails about this film, so I wanted to feature it this weekend. Dorian Gray is an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray that stars Ben Barnes as the titular character. At first I thought, for some odd reason, this was some throwaway fantasy film that was grasping for attention when it should be going straight-to-DVD, but I was wrong about that. STYD debuted a trailer for it during Comic-Con (which I've included below) and our friends at Empire recently debuted a rather eye-catching poster (which you see a piece of above). It actually looks pretty damn good, so check it out!

Story centers on Gray, a corrupt young man who becomes the subject of a painting. As the man descends into a hedonistic lifestyle, the portrait begins to age and morph, but he is able to keep his youthful beauty.

Dorian Gray is directed by British filmmaker Oliver Parker, of Othello, The Importance of Being Earnest, and St. Trinian's. The screenplay was written by first-time writer Toby Finlay. This is an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray first published in 1890. Dorian Gray is premiering at the Toronto Film Festival next month and is set to open in the UK in September, but it doesn't have a US distributor yet.
----------------------------------------------------

Hadn't heard of this project before. Anyone aware of this?

Quote:
As literary classics go, Oscar Wilde's story The Picture of Dorian Gray is scary, disturbing stuff. And appropriately, it looks from this poster like Oliver Parker's film version, Dorian Gray, is also going to creep us all out.

It's the story of the titular Dorian (Prince Caspian's Ben Barnes), a privileged and beautiful young man in Victorian England who wishes, as he gazes at his latest portrait, that the picture could age instead of him. Lo and behold, it does - but as Dorian becomes older and more corrupt, the portrait in the attic becomes a monster.

The film is out on September 9, also starring Colin Firth, Ben Chaplin, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Rebecca Hall. We can feel the shivers down on spines now.

Release is less than a month away and this is the first I've heard of this movie.

Is it wide release? US theaters? Looks like a UK release.

Yes it is, and produced by Ealing Studios which I thought was defunct!

Thanks for posting this Greenscar. This has always been an interesting story concept to me. I'm excited about the movie. I should get around to reading the book one day.

Thanks for the update GreenScar. I remember hearing about this project some time ago, but had totally forgotten about it. Oscar Wilde is a great writer, but unfortunately I have yet to read this novel. I guess I'd better get reading before the movie comes out.

Don't forget the original also, it is B&W throughout, except for about 2 seconds of colour which makes you jump out of your skin at the appropriate moment.

Is this a joke, and it just went over my head? You know that the character was from the Oscar Wilde book, right? Right!?! He's an interesting character because he changes from a naive and innocent person to a debauched and depraved individual.

The book was already adapted into a movie in the 40's. The picture featured in that film was a beautifully grotesque and disturbing painting by Ivan Le Lorraine Albright.

The curse of that wee
[Show spoiler] Egyptian cat... be careful what you say before sacred statuettes
.

That's the colour insert in the B&W film... it comes as quite a shock, even today.

For anyone interested, look out for the original... It includes an early Angela Landsbury (of "Murder she wrote" fame), before she morphed into Jessica Fletcher.

Re the 1945 movie and the wonderful yet gruesome painting at the end - here's an article on said painting (and some other works by artist Alvin Albright):

Well worth a read.
