Default Wall color and TV

Hi,

I have recently renovated my room and need some help from the pros here.

1. I was wondering if the color of the wall on which i mount my TV matters? if so, what would be an ideal color to go with?

2. I also need help selecting a TV. Im from India and TVs here cost twice as much as US.. Im looking at something around the 50 in range. Usage would include: 50% HD gaming, 15% movies, rest would be cable tv..Avg 4 hrs/day including weekends.. I was wondering if LED is a good choice? 46in Samsung 7 series LED in India is $3100!! 7 series Samsung 55 in is $6000!!!!!! They dont have the 8 series here yet!! I know it sucks..

Thanks for the help..

Wall color won't really matter - more important is where any window glare will come from, and ambient light placement in the room. Light glare - reflected off the walls or directly from lamps or windows - are the biggest hassle to deal with.

LCD used to be the low price alternative, but now the LCD/LED and plasma prices are running fairly closely - at 52" or larger, I'd look at plasma. Below that, just pick the best picture from either type and try to keep the costs down.

I have a Pioneer Kuro and a Sony XBR4, and while the Pioneer can't be touched for picture...I sure as heck am not throwing out my Sony.

Thanks blu-dog,

Well the window in my room is directly opposite the tv, I have pretty dark curtains so that should not be an issue, also light reflections are not a problem, since if needed i will keep the lights off..

I am looking at something close to 52", you say i should go with a plasma?

Wall color behind a video monitor is a vital consideration in program mastering facilities, where image fidelity is paramount. This technical paper will help you make your decisions based upon proven imaging science principles and display industry standards/recommended practice.

I believe wall color to be extremely important for optimal viewing. I know this by experimentation first hand. I also sought the advice if Alan indirectly by following his posts in the bias lighting thread, and am now very pleased with the achievement of better PQ all because of my room color. I am still in the process of getting the optimal bias lighting, but even without, there was an immediate difference.

Color of wall behind display should be neutral: Black, grey, white, Not red or pink, blue, yellow etc :P

A white wall behind the display will make the TV (specially the display's blacks) be perceived as darker, and a black wall, the opposite. You probably can compensate for this somewhat a little bit by tweaking the display gamma or black level after calibration. The larger the display screen is (The larger it fills your field of vision) the less influence the back wall has. A 120" projector screen's perception is probably not influenced much by the back wall. (But it's influenced by the reflections of the walls in front and the sides facing it which should be neutral dark if possible in any case )
