Default Any thoughts on B&W MT-30 Setup and current pricing

I got the ok to increase my budget somewhat. Anyone have these? I think I am going to buy the pioneer elite sc-25 receiver to go along with some speaker setup. What do you guys think? Any other speaker suggestions? The only things is the wife says the speakers have to be satellite.

Thanks,

Lou

Why do they have to be satellites? What is her reasoning?

I'm just asking because, my wife was once like that and now I have a set of beautiful B&W towers in my house.

By satellite, do you mean bookshelf speakers as opposed to tower speakers?

No, he means even smaller than a bookshelf.

Here is the MT-30 5.1 setup he is looking at.

In that case, I would encourage you to stretch your budget and convince the better half to go for slightly bigger and better bookshelf speakers. I am not a fan of satellites. Their low frequency extension is so high (usually 120Hz or 150Hz +-3dB). That puts a lot of pressure on the subwoofer and makes it too directional and distracting. Most subwoofers that can go deep and low cannot produce higher frequencies that well.

These B&W's are rated to go to 80Hz +-3db. However, with a 4" mid/bass driver, I'm not sure how well they will perform. I personally have never heard them.

I'm not sure how you are planning on placing them in your room, but if you are looking into a speaker with minimal floor space, the XT series are very nice.

I auditioned them at a Ken Cranes store here. They may make exceptional bookshelf speakers, but the satellites sounded quite anaemic to me.

If you have that kind of budget(I'm assuming around $1200), do check out the Definitive Technology ProCinema 800. I've heard the 600, which sound amazing for their size. The 800 feature bigger drivers and a more powerful sub.
