Criterion Che (2008)

I heard that Criterion will be releasing Che as an entire film on BD. Is this true?

In Europe, they released two separate BDs.

Which has heck all to do with the US release from Criterion!

Anyway, to actually answer the question - no one knows. Criterion members have discussed Che and pretty much confirmed it is tentatively planned to come out in January or February. When they discuss it, they always just refer to 'Che' - not 'Che part 1' or anything like that. So it would seem it would be sold as one package, possibly with 2 discs - 1 for each part. But it's all speculation, we'll hopefully know soon enough.

Sign me up for a copy.
I'll start saving for it now, and expect it to retail for around $60.

Is it me or has this movie seem to be purposely ignored in the US??
It got no promotion that I saw or heard in the states. The way I came about even knowing about this film was a mention here on blu ray.com. I was shocked to learn that it is a 2008 release and will finally get in 2010! From what I gathered on netflix ( which has been in my que for over 6 months!) it seems to be a two disc set. I would like to hear you guys opinion on the US release of this film?

I have been excited to see this movie since I first read about it. Then it seemed to fall off the map for a bit...I am hoping I can rent it somewhere before I commit to a purchase. If I am remembering correctly I had heard that Blockbuster has exclusive rights to rentals of this film. If that really is the case then I may never even have the opportunity to watch it.

I doubt that I will ever be able to bring myself to drop $50.00 - $60.00 or so on a blind buy...that's just me though. I am sure there will be plenty of others who will take the risk on the purchase. Some will regret making that purchase and I don't want to be that guy.

I feel the same way. I had been reading about this for more than a year, I'm a huge Benicio fan, and could not wait until its release. It was never even shown in my area. I was robbed! If I had a blu ray player that could play UK releases, I would own it already. I subscribe to Empire magazine and have read so many great things about this movie and want it so bad.

It should be a 2 disc set, the first one containing "The argentinian" and the second one "Guerilla". That's the way it was filmed, two separate parts.

If you buy it from the UK, that's one option that they offer. That's the one I got.

Very good material. Great work by Benicio del Toro too.

Maybe the lack of support in the U.S., appart from fear of ideological backlash, was due to the fact that the movie is in spanish. Put the two things together, and they spell "highly risky" for any studio.

Hmmm the mystery continue, I was never played here in California that I know of. And I like to go to the small independent theater every now and then.

Man, its looking like your hitting the nail right on the head. I am surprise there would be any backlash since since everybody walks around with a Che shirt and I'm in California where I have gone to my local cineplex and watched first run spanish movies in digital. I suspect the sore losers from the bay of pig are holding this movie down

The man was a Marxist revolutionary, or better described as "anti-Capitalist." If someone doesn't get why the movie about Che didn't get any play in the U.S., then they must have just come from another planet.

There's a disc coming to Canada as well, but not from Criterion. E1 entertainment has an extra-less set coming Nov. 24th. So for those looking for a cheaper disc...

+1...many positives but an equal number of negatives. Maybe even more. The photo of him is considered the world's most famous image.

In regards to the film, I am very excited about it. A buddy of mine said he thought it was "okay" but I think it will be very good. I really like Del Toro and Soderbergh.

Considering it's a Criterion release, then that might be a fantastic but expensive set. Anyway I've seen already the movie and it's great. No wonder why Soderbergh is perhaps the best american filmmaker of today (bar the "old masters" like Scorsese or Eastwood).

I must admit, reluctantly, that you probably have a point. However, there is something else that needs to be said:

Nowadays, practically every good American director that wants to make a serious film goes to France. Steven Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, etc. are a lot better received overseas than they are here. There is a good reason why these directors are often praised at Cannes, Berlin, and Venice - and not at home. The American film industry is heading in a different direction, and many of these directors have realized that.

As far as Che is concerned, when Benicio Del Toro won the Best Actor Award at Cannes, he received an enormous amount of attention (media coverage) in the European press. In America, aside from being mentioned in a few selected industry publications, such as Variety Magazine, his accomplishment was pretty much ignored. In one of the documentaries included in the British release of Che, courtesy of Optimum Home Entertainment, he actually addresses the issue (though in a very diplomatic way). I hope Criterion manage to include it on their disc - it is quite fascinating.

Pro-B
