120/240Hz LCD problems explained

In this article Gary Merson and Michael Framer show the problems still inherent with 120Hz and 240Hz LCD and/or LED sets, relating to motion interpolation and its relationship with motion resolution.

The conclusion? Motion resolution only scores high when motion interpolation is on...and the image is always degraded as a result.

The video shows you exactly what's happening on the screen in these instances.

Awesome find doby, good read. Having a frame interpolation set my self, i do keep my interpolation on, but usually on low. not because im fascinated with the "Window effect" i just value motion resolution a little more than losing a little quality detail. eagar to see what sets look like in 2-3 years, with time to improve the chips and possibly eliminate the mis-interpolation/artifacts.

"Activating the ME/MC circuit created some nasty artifacts." "This translates to a loss of fine detail such as film grain and overall image alteration."

and

"Therefore, to achieve image consistency, the LCD panel must degrade the actual frame’s image quality to match that of the synthesized frame, which is why the test pattern shows the degradation."

By these two statments, although the image / film / motion may appear more "fluid" it is actually of significate lower quality at times on your actual display becuase the computer within the player and the tv while communicating are guessing where the frame will go next.

My next question then lies with, does the PS3 stream data to the hard drive before actually playing a disk, like cache? If so wouldn't a PS3 then be capable of far greater image quality than any standalone player due to it's internal processing, ram, and harddrive?

After looking at some of the 120 and 240; I think I will stick with 60. IMO the 60 is smoother.

Yes, providing it does 5:5 pulldown properly.
Then you would turn OFF motion interpolation and just use the 5:5 feature.
