Default Probably a stupid question... Blu-rays on a SD television?

Because of the price drop, I recently purchased a PS3 (it's on the way from Amazon). I do not (yet) have an HDTV. Will I be able to view Blu-Ray movies on my PS3 using my standard television. I know that if I do so, the picture will not look as good as it would on an HDTV. I ask though because I do plan on eventually getting an HDTV and I don't want to waste money on regular DVDs that will be obsolete in a few months (hopefully) when I have an HDTV and a PS3/Blu-Ray. I assumed you could until I went to add a Blu-Ray to my queue in Blockbuster and it made it sound as if I needed a Blu-Ray player AND an HDTV in order to play the movie.

You can play the movie, but it will look like a regular DVD. You have to have an HDTV to get the high-def picture. I did this a few months before I got my HDTV.

It will play fine on your tv, there just won't be much difference from a standard dvd.

Yes.

The thing here is there are rarely if ever any compression artifacts, and the colour fidelity is better. So, you might find it somewhat surperior to DVD.

But, the big wow will come when you do get a 1080p set. And, I do recommend you save up for 1080p.

If you are looking for a TV, I highly suggest a Bravia. LCD technology is my favorite (other ppl like plasma but I am partial to LCD), and this one is amazing looking. It is also, technically, one of the best tv's to look at and to optimize (very precise controls but I suggest you have a pro calibrate it for you).
Once you got 1080p, there is no going back.
Remember, DVD's will be upsampled on the PS3, and will look better on your HDTV than they do on your SDTV, so when you get that TV, your PS3 will make them look better too. Graned they won't look as good as a Blu-ray, but there are more titles out for DVD than anything else. So if you want to buy something and can't find it on Blu, and don't want to wait, go ahead and get the DVD, you will be pleasently surprised.
Also, to view a PS3 on a SDTV, you only have to use the provided cables, strange that they do that. To watch it on an HDTV, you NEED to buy an HDMI cable. This will give you the highest quality in both sound and video in one cable, and looks absolutely wonderful.
Good luck and enjoy!

This is a great place for information on all things Blu-Ray and HD related. I recommend visiting this site once a day.

Don't worry if you think your question is stupid, many people ask the same questions you will have. If your not sure if the question has been asked before you can use the search feature.

Welcome

There will be a difference from DVD:You won't be bothered by banding nearly as much, and those blocky horrible artifacts in shadows will be gone too.Just don't expect anything in the resolution department though.
