Default Question about Projection television lamps?

How long will the lamps die out? And can I pick up a replacement lamp at my local best buy store or circuit city, or do I have to go to their official website and buy it from them?

I don't know if there's just one answer to your question. I bought my proj. TV (sony) from Tweeter, and there was a known issue w/the lamps on the early models - my lamp then burned out in about a month's time. I called Tweeter and they happily traded my bulb assembly for a new one, thankfully their service center was near my house, so I could pick it up. The new bulb burned out in ~ 2mos, at that point I asked that they send a technician to my house to do the replacement. I've had THAT bulb working fine for ~3 yrs. now. So I think that a technician will likely be your only option, but it doesn't hurt to see if you can pick up the part (likely NOT at a store).

I haven't had to replace the bulb in any of my projection TV yet, but what did the technician do different from what you did in replacing the bulbs? With my projector (a JVC DLA-HD1) the lamp is clearly intended to be user replaceable so I wouldn't be inclined to bother with a technician. Perhaps in your case the technician made some adjustment or did something besides just replacing the lamp.

sorry, didn't mean to imply he necessarily did anything DIFFERENT, the bulbs on my proj. TV are also user-replaceable, but (if I remember correctly) the service center didn't have any more bulbs at the time.

There was apparently an issue w/the early mercury bulbs (that caused them to burn out prematurely) in the model Sony set that I bought, but the only thing that was different w/the technician was that he presumably had the newer bulbs that worked correctly.

Is it rear projection or lcd rear projection. I have a sony e2000 RPLCD and it guestimates around 8000 hours. Good thing is its easily replaceable, just costs about $200. I have heard that cutting the tv on and leaving it on is better than cutting it off for a 45 minute trip the grcery store or something of the like. As with any bulb, the stress of off and on are what helps kill it.
