One of the major knocks against Blu Ray by HD DVD (Toshiba) was the disks were going to be more expensive due to the fact that you could not produce them with a retro fit of the existing DVD plants. I just checked out Future Shop (Best Buy in Eastern Canada and the States) and I did not notice any difference in the average price of Blu Ray vs HD DVD. Actually I noticed the opposite albiet rarely the price of the same Blu Ray and HD DVD the Blu Ray was 2-3 dollars cheaper. This might be because they did not have a SD-DVD side.

Warner HD DVDs cost an average of $1 more for movies on both formats due to the Combo disc prices.
Paramount movies cost the same regardless of format. However, most likely due to the higher price of the Fox catalog titles, BD prices are overall on average higher than HD DVDs. Though as mentioned discs that are out on both formats cost more on HD DVD on average. |

DVD/HD-DVD combo titles are more expensive than the same title on BD. Dual format titles have the same price.
But what the OP is talking about is the cost of replication. While it may be slightly more expensive for BD in the beginning, it only meant that the studios are getting lesser margins than they would with HD-DVD. For the consumers, we don't see that replication cost difference in the retail price at all. Only when compared to DVD, you can see the premium and that's to be expected. We are already one year in the "war" and no BD studios have switched sides. In fact, what's been happening is that smaller independent studios either have gone neutral or are supporting BD exclusively. Clearly they see more potential in BD sales than just that extra margin per disc. fuad |

Back in January when I was deciding which format to support, I was doing a lot of research online. I don't remember the site, but there was article about cost of making Blu-ray and HD-DVD disks. This was before the combo disc so I don't know too much about them. They compared HD-15GB vs Blu-25GB and HD-30BG vs Blu50GB. The site said that HD-DVD were cheaper per disc, but Blu-ray was cheaper per GB.
I'm sure everything has change since the article, but I am sure Blu-ray is cheaper to make. |

Where did you preorder 300 for $22? And by owning 55 Blu-rays, I'd assume you have some new releases thrown in. Where do you get them for $22 and under?

I usually just wait for sales, Buy 2 get 1 free, 50% off, ebay, stuff like that. I have a Visa credit card with Amazon reward program so I get a $25 gift card once in a while. I've order Enemy of the State and Final Fantasy for 40.90 -$25. I only paid 15.90 for two Blu-rays not a deal ![]() New movies like Shooter, I'll wait for the price will drop or a sale will come. I'm not in a rush to buy movies. I'll just buy when I find a good deal. Last time I check my average cost for my 55 Blu-rays is about $14.70 including Planet Earth. This also includes any taxes and shipping charges I've paid for. |

![]() I've got a place nearby that sells the "new" catalog titles for $19.99 and the new releases from $22-25. I'll pay up to $26 for a movie I really want, no reason to pay anymore than that, but I realize with the new technology comes the burden on the high price tags. Was like that with vhs, dvd, and now blu-ray. Just have to weather the storm and eventually the prices will fall in line. |
