Default Interesting, Different, Classic Blu-ray Movies

My sister asked me today what I wanted for Christmas. I figured some blu ray movies would be perfect. I was about to name off movies like Fight Club and The Hangover (which are fantastic movies), but then I decided I wanted something different. I love cult movies (Oldboy, Lynch movies) and old classics (Hitchcock, Kurosawa). I started looking at some of the Criterions that I have never seen like Last Year at Marienbad, Repulsion, and Chungking Express. What recommendations do you guys have. Are the Criterions that I listed above any good? Thanks.

I thought Repulsion was great. Picture quality was very sharp, and the movie was . . .disturbing. Hadn't seen it in years, but it stayed with me for days after seeing it. Very good release!

For something a little off the beaten trail try Run Lola Run, or Wings of Desire. Also, The Third Man if you can snag a copy.

For something more mainstream but yet offbeat I'd recommend trying Coraline.

These are just the first few in my Blu-ray collection that come to mind. I have many other Criterion titles including Kurosawa, but not yet on Blu-ray.

I saw Run, Lola, Run (great movie) and I own The Third Man (a classic). I may have to check out Wings of Desire and Coraline (I am a huge Gaiman fan).

If you like period dramas you could ask for Howards End or A Room With A View.

A few more films I'd recommend would be The Infernal Affairs Trilogy, Red Cliff 1+2, and Exiled. These are Hong Kong films, the first being the trilogy off which The Departed was based, the second being an epic war film about one of the defining battles in Chinese History and perhaps it's best selling novel, and the third is a shoot-em-up film with fantastic gun fights and a great audio track.

One film that I really like which didn't get much attention in the US, despite being in English and having headliners like Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman, is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Unfortunately the German BD is fairly expensive.

Playtime, Chungking Express, Repulsion, The 400 Blows, For All Mankind, North By Northwest, Last Year at Marienbad (want to see this, but don't want it in the cardboard packaging), and Wings of Desire

Infernal Affairs looks great, but I would rather wait for a US release. I saw Perfume in the theater, I thought that it was pretty good.

Weinstein Company released the DVD, so they probably hold the US home video release rights. Good luck with that.

Currently the box set Blu-ray is availalbe from DDDhouse.com for just over $70US shipped.

I have to say (even if only to pad my post-count) North By Northwest was going to be my suggestion. Good choice.

I have yet to watch Run Lola Run. I got it from the Sony credit card deal for free. Hoping I like it, if not, good price anyway.

I recently imported The Elephant Man from NZ (also available in the UK) and it is an excellent presentation with three Lynch interviews included in the special features.

I can also vouch for North by Northwest. It looks superb.

I read the two reviews on this site, nothing for the third movie at all.

I'm certainly interested in getting the first one. But I'm wondering what opinions there are on the trilogy? I'm also wondering if there might be a cheaper source for just the first movie. DDDhouse has it for $25.....sadly, if I'm gonna have it shipped from all the way over there, might make sense to just get the trilogy....wouldn't be the first time I over-spent.

I can't recommend the sequels. Especially if money is tight, just get Infernal Affairs. The second one was abysmal.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Lady Vengeance
The Hunger
Donnie Darko

Those are some off-beat films, I guess. Although I don't know if Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is on Blu-Ray, but I know Lady Vengeance is up for an import and Id on't know about The Hunger either. But all of those are still fantastic films.

North by Northwest and The 400 Blows are my favorites of the films you listed, so I highly recommend those.

Repulsion is a little like a Hitchcock film, but a little more surreal and disturbing, since it's by Roman Polanski.

I enjoyed Wings of Desire when I first saw it in the 80's, but I can't recall too much of it, since that was a long time ago. I remember it certainly looked good, with it's stark black and white photography.

I haven't seen all of Playtime, but if it's anything like Mr. Hulot's Holiday, then I would expect it to be a little like a Chaplin feature in terms of gags, with a feeling of "New Wave" style filmmaking. I think Playtime takes place in a modern office building, right? What little I've seen of the film dealt with jokes about the confusion of dealing with a labyrinthian office building, and the sound effects played a large part in creating an unsettling feeling.

The others I haven't seen. (I think I once rented Chungking Express, but I can't really recall.)
