Default 2 PS3's in same house trying mw2 online problem.

Hi all,

We seem to be having some problems trying to play with eachother online. We recently got our second ps3 so my bro can play mw2 with me online. Problem is, when i try to invite him he doesn't see my invites and visa versa. When we finally manage to party up (after like 15 min of trying) we search for games but don't find any players. However, when 1 of us is hosting, we find people, the game starts but only the 2 of us actually manage to get in the game, the rest of the people time out after a while.

Is it possible to play online at the same time? We are using a modem, not a router. 1 PS3 is wired, the other one wireless.

Anyone got any idea's on how to fix this problem?

i am not sure of what mw2's behaviour is supposed to be in your scenario. but it definitely could be a routing issue, your modem must also be functioning as a router. it may be that the router can only forward external game info to one ps3 at a time, but both ps3s can talk to each other on the local network. getting a proper gaming router might help out, but i couldnt guarantee that without having 2 ps3s to test with myself .

Are you saying you don't have a router? I don't think it is possible without a router. You have to have some sort of routing device in play to be able have two console joining together to play.

Does your modem have built in router? Im pretty sure each ps3 needs their own ip address assigned.

Thanks for all the replies, ive been checking out my modem and i found some things like :

- I can port forward but i don't know the ports that ps3 use :s
- I can put 1 IP address in DMZ zone
- UPnP is not active

Now i don't quite understand the following, i get quite alot of IP's as seen in the picture below. Anyone know if this modem is ok? Or do i need to get a router?

If you only try to connect with one PS3 does the connection work properly?

- If the answer to above is "Yes", then there is something wrong with either how your modem is handling itself as a router (many models do this part poorly at best), or possibly your PS3 internet connection settings.

- If the answer is "No", then the problem could be your ISP or your modem settings.

Well the answer is Yes, i can play perfectly with just 1 PS3, however, if my bro and i are playing seperatly online, the modem has no problems aswell, its just when we are in a party.

I'm gonna try and put 1 PS3 in the DMZ and enable UPnP, i'll let you guys know what result that gives me.

Thanks again for all the replies.

This.

My bro and I have played many times in the same house, but we have a wireless router. It will occasionally get picky and kick one of us off, but for the most part, we have no problems.

I can only guess but if you have Dynamic IP's enabled on your router, your router will assign the first available IP address in your network to the first PS3 that connects and maybe that can cause some conflicts (I've had that issue before with a notebook and a PS3 both trying to use the same IP address)

To avoid this, you'll need to assign fixed IP addresses for your PS3 and open the same ports for both, so both have the same kind of access to the Internet but don't get in each other's way. You do this by:

- In your router, go to the firewall settings and add 2 fixed IP addresses, for which you open the same ports, required for online play with PS3's (these ports can easily be found using google)
- In each PS3, you have to reset your Internet connection settings but don't choose automatic (because you want to decided the IP address you wish to give each PS3), instead go with manual: enter a different IP address for each PS3 but keep other settings (DNS server, etc) the same

Not sure if this will fix it for you, but at the very least, it'll prevent conflicts between both PS3's if they try to use the same IP address.

In general, it's a good idea to assign a fixed IP address to all equipment (BD-player, console, notebook , etc) that connects to your router, to avoid conflicts. Since I've done this, I've never had problems, even when two notebooks and a PS3 connect wirelessly at the same time.

Well i managed to get both PS3's on open nat but we still can't play together. When i invite him now or he me we get it instantly like normal but when we try to join eachothers party we instantly get the error : Failed to connect to host.

I enabled UPnP and put 1 of the PS3's in the DMZ zone, next step will be taking the 1 PS3 out of DMZ, see what that gives me.

Kyo, ive searched my modem (don't have a router) and i can only find port forwarding :s.

You probably have a modem/router combo (both devices rolled into one) :
- a modem translates the internet signals to computer language (1's and 0's) so to speak. It only connects to one device (e.g. a computer)
- a router will split that signal over multiple devices, hence the name: it reroutes signals to create your home network.

All you need to do is give a fixed IP to both your PS3's. You do this by resetting your PS3's Internet connection settings and choosing 'manual'

Take good note of the addresses you've entered and make sure each address is used only once!

If you're having trouble finding all the necessary info, open MSDOS on your PC and type ipconfig. There you'll see the internal IP of your computer as well as DNS server and so on. Make sure you choose a different IP for your PS3 than then one your computer (or other devices) is using.

After that is done, go to your port forwarding tab in your modem/router and per IP address, open the necessary ports, being:
3478, 3479, 3658, 80, 443, 5223, 10070-10080
So you'll need to enter these ports twice: once per PS3

After that, both PS3's won't be in each other's way any more and will be able to communicate through the necessary ports.

After trying all the stuff you (and Sony) gave me, i finally found something that works perfectly.

I had to give the 2 PS3's fixed IP's like you guys said (not in the modem, in the settings on the PS3 itself). I had to switch off UPnP, had to take the PS3 out of the DMZ (so no PS3's are in the DMZ) and I didn't have to open up those ports.

Sony gave me 2 DNS addresses which I had to use as primary and secondairy.

After doing that, we tried partying up and playing. Worked on the first try perfectly .

So i'd like to thank you all for all your suggestions . I tried asking this on the PS / MW2 forums but there i just got replies like "Get a better router / modem", "It doesn't work",... So i really appreciate your advice and all your replies

Congrats man! This is good info since I plan on eventually getting another PS3 in the house too.

I should give you guys an update, been too busy lately to post here. It worked for a few hours and then it stopped working, same errors started happening again.

Now we can still party up and play together if someone else is hosting, the second one of us hosts its fubar. We got a good connection (20mbps) so we tend to host alot .

I have this exact same issue. I have set the IP address on both systems. Both are wired into the same router. All the internet settings check out and in game the NAT type is "open". We can play separately online without ever having issues but when we send each other invites we have never once been able to connect.

I've got the same problem as him , but mine is way stranger... i only have 1 PS3, i can invite everyone i know except for 1 person(same thing for him) which live on the same street as me. It says unable to connect to host or whatever..

Sometime in the middle of a game i get kicked. for no reason, or even everyone get kicked except for me(hehe free win xD).

I oppened every port you listed + some other i found on a MW2 forum.
My NAT Type is 2

what the **** is wrong..!
