As best I can tell, and maybe some of you can clear this up for me:

Backwards compatibility, at least to PS2 games, is not supposed to be a problem like it is for the Xbox360 going back to Xbox 1 games... is it?

As far as I know, PS3 is at least 99% compatible, out of the box, with PS2 games - apparently as long as the developer followed the "rules" and didn't use work arounds to do stuff then the game will run.

Unlike, as you say, the 360 where you need the hard drive, and only then can you play Xbox games that MS have bothered to create emulation for.

Downloadable PS2 games, hmm. I guess that's possible, it might take a while to download, and use up a lot of bandwidth on a capped broadband service, but why not?

I would think that the online network is being worked on as we speak. Sony has about a month left, since they claim that the online network will be available on day one. In reguards to playing ps1 and ps2 games, the last thing that I heard about is any ps1 or ps2 games that don't work on the ps3 are the ones that no one cares about.
