Default iPhone Downgrade?

Ok, I want to cut back on my phone bill to save up when the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 comes out.

Right now I pay $85 a month for an iPhone 3G service with Unlimited Data, 100 something Text..blah blah blah. Is there a way I can get At&t to let me down grade from a Data Plan to a cheaper plan since most of the people I know owns At&t and still let me use my iPhone since texting is much easier.
So pretty much what I want to do is use it as an iPod Touch that can make phone calls.

Has anyone tried this yet?

When you got your iPhone with AT&T they lock you into an agreement that you need to have the data plan.

AT&T = fail.

I wouldn't {entirely} say that... I mean they DO have to make money on the product, and Iphones are bleedin' expensive pieces of kit {which is factored into your basic monthly bill when you sign the contract}

The data is required to have the phone. The best you could do is alter the number of voice minutes. Even then though, whenever a change is made to a plan it renews the original agreement terms, so if you signed up for 2 years then you will be stuck with that new plan for two years again.

Would be the same with any other carrier wouldn't it?
I read an article a couple of weeks ago that said that AT&T's bandwidth usage has jumped 5,000% because of the iPhone.

Not if you get an unlocked phone. Some companies now offer month to month plans with no commitment as long as you provide the phone or pay the full unsubsidized price.

Check with AT&T to see if you can get a discount through employer or college. I get around 20% off each month due to employer discount.

Wow. I guess since I have a work and home phone I am doing the low like 400 min a month with unlimited Internet and pay like $65 with my iPhone. I really wanted to wait on the Blackberry Storm 2 but the blackberry plans are higher than I wanted to pay.

It's all in the agreement. If you don't like it, don't sign. I'm completely satisfied with my iPhone and the contract.

Why not just wait and get the 4g when it comes out? Why do you want to switch to the Xperia?

I'm a long time AT&T customer, but I'm a brand new cutomer as far as iPhones or any high tech phones out there. I too also have the same discount so my bill will jump from $45 to about $85 a month. I wish you can just connect to an existing wi-fi spot instead of buying the that data internet service. We'll see how that goes for me...

you can go to existing hot spots for wifi if an iPhone user. From what i learned from years ago is that you just need to get a Starbucks gift card, register it at starbucks.com and then create a log in and you can surf the web at any Starbucks Hotspot locations. I used to do it in my original iPhone and tried it out in a Macbook Pro, they give you 2 hours a day to use it and you must use your Gift Card atleast once a month.

No 3G on T-Mobile is the only downside to that. But yeah, for 60 bucks you could have 500 minutes and unlimited text/data. I rocked an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile for awhile, but have since taken a shine to Android.
