Let me Google that for you. I keed, I keed

Just because I've done all my business through them: Digital Audio Cables at Blue Jeans Cable

If you have HDMI on your receiver, you should be using that from your PS3 in order to utilize any of the HD sound formats.

Just a word of advice. Usually, the optical output from a TV is just 2.0 audio. It's best to connect the PS3 directly to the receiver, that way you can get the full 5.1 or 7.1 audio signal.

From the movie Mr. Mom: You're doing it wrong.

First, what brand/model is your AVR?

Assuming it can accept HDMI, you need to connect your PS3 to your AVR with and HDMI cable, and then run a cable from the AVR to the TV. If your AVR does not accept HDMI, then run HDMI from your PS3 to your TV (for video only), and run digital optical from you PS3 (NOT yout TV) to your AVR. The reason choices are greyed out on the PS3 is because it detects what your TV is capable of receiving (I think that's how it works), and only allows you to feed it those signals. You'll never get HD audio or even lossy 5.1 this way.

Please explain how you have things wired. Do you have the PS3 connected to the Denon AVR with an HDMI cable, and then an HDMI from the AVR to the TV?

If you do indeed have it hooked up that way, then you shouldnt need an optical cable. Make sure that your PS3 is set to output Linear PCM. Video Settings>BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)>Linear PCM. Then go in to your Sound Settings>Audio Output Settings>HDMI>Automatic. I'm willing to bet you have it set to bitstream and that's why your having an issue.

One other thing to check is the HDMI audio out setting on the AVR. If you have your HDMI cables connected the way you say (PS3--->AVR--->TV), and you are listening to audio from your TV speakers, then you are passing the HDMI audio through the AVR to the TV. When you do this, your audio is automatically limited to whatever the TV can accept (typically 2.0 stereo), and other options will be greyed-out on the PS3.

Make sure the AVR HDMI audio out feature (or whatever it is called on your AVR) is set to OFF or NO. You won't be able to listen to audio through your TV speakers, but you will through the AVR. That's how mine works, anyway.
