Default Blu-ray switch

Hello,

I came to this site and was amazed of some of the collections on here. Some got almost over 400 blu's while it's relatively new in the game.I just started and got around 10 or so mainly due to the costprice over here.I'm also not sure on switching my dvd collection to blu-ray although I already bought 3 classics that I also got on dvd.My problem is that i'm afraid this will continue to happen.People coming out with new technologies and stuff so the journey will be never ending :-).How do you all cope with this?As I was looking over here I also noticed you trade and buy a lot of used blu-rays.I'm willing to go that route but would have a problem with the movies not being brand new.Although ppl that come here treat their stuff right i'm sure..Give me some wisdom :d..

I dont think you will find another format superior to BD for quite a long time. Sure you can have all your movies on the computer but you get no special features or anything. If I were you, i'd invest your money into BD cause it certainly isnt going anyway. It is THE pinaccle of Home Video.

I wouldn't get rid of my DVD collection and/or double-dip on most of them. I'd only do it if the BD reviews were top-rated for PQ/AQ on some of my favourite DVD's. This is where the Blu-ray.com reviews come in handy.

I love the Bourne movies and recently bought the Ultimate Bourne Collection on BD. It was well-worth double-dipping on it, as they are far superior to the DVD versions.

The vast majority of new releases, I have no interest in. With DVD, I inevitably ended up with some junk, but I am pretty selective about my purchases, ending up with 'only' 400 or so DVDs. My blu ray collection will also be quality over quantity.

You'll find that if you hunt for bargains it's VERY easy to amass a large collection quickly (I hunt pawn shops weekly). Also I can't stand DVD now that I have blu, if I know there's a better version out there of the movie upgrade I must . I have found only ONE blu ray that I didn't find worth the upgrade so far (the punisher with Thomas Jane, didn't look/sound any better than the DVD and was not the superior extended cut)

My Blu-rays hated being anywhere near my DVDs. They just didn't get along very well. I just had to let my DVDs go...it wasn't hard.

Likewise

I started off with the mentality that I would only pick up new blu's or my favorites on blu, and keep my standard DVD collection, it started that way...but quickly turned, especially if you keep your eyes out for deals which can be found fairly easily if you do search. I also found that selling my DVD's to a local re-sale shop can be a great way to fund double-dips, and in some cases (although rare) I was able to get the BD for only $1-2 more after having sold the DVD version. This makes amassing a collection happen very quickly. I began my BD collection in Mid December, and already have 85+.

As far as your question goes, I would very much agree with the previous poster that there will not be a format that is accepted widely on a consumer basis that will replace Blu-Ray anytime soon. I thought very much the way you did prior to joining the blu band wagon, however anything that would replace Blu-ray is inevitably years and years away, especially as becoming a recognized consumer standard. The only technology that *may* influence would be 3D, however I am hard pressed to believe that 3D technology is actually going to *stick* this time around and be something that everybody has or uses. Even if this is the case, and it does *stick*, from what I understand those films will still utilize a BD player, and and those will still play non-3D BD's.

Also, considering that the "next format" would have to be something that is so advantageous to the consumer that they would consider re-buying all of their favorite films, and equipment (TV, Player, Audio Receiver/Decoder, etc) it would have to be a fairly big 'increase' or step up, which I also truly believe to be years and years in the future, as it would be tough for me to imagine anything being better than BD with current standards.

Anyways, welcome aboard! Hope that helps.

there will always be new tech, and I see it as a good thing. But my guess is that BD will be a round for a while, 3D, 7.1 lossless audio means that it is locked it on that front. On the video there is definitely room for improvement, but 4K (1080p is ~2k) appears far away (no real displays for it) and lossless will most likely never happen. I can't see a new tech that does not offer a large improvement. DVD offered scene selection, multiple languages, lower production costs, 5.1 audio, extras. BD offered, HD, less compression,7.1, lossless, live, bonus and now 3d and others i might have forgotten. You need a few differences to entice people to buy into a new format or it dies.

That being said, new formats are not the only reason to upgrade, right? I am sure many double dipped when superbit DVD came out or extended editions.....

At my most, I had over 3000 DVDs (just eyeballing it), but I gave some away and crated the rest. Now it is more then 500 BDs. This is how I see it. I (and I guess you) am interested in the quality of the presentation, if not I would not have bought into BD and not be wondering what is next and how much better it can get. I am sure some people are not interested and they might still be watching their VHS tapes and never upgraded from that point, but I am that way. So a new format is both a blessing (I get higher quality as I want) and a curse (takes a lot of $) but what choice is there? enjoy the ride and spend what you can, as a hobby, even if there was not that continuous upgrade, you should always spend at most what you can afford. I don't think it makes sense to stick with the old and not upgrade when it is available because there will be something new eventually? what do you do for now. Do you stick with a PC that does not cut it because Intel will have a new processor? MS will have a new OS? there will be a new office?..... you just upgrade every few years when the old stuff becomes annoying and you don't think of the future. Now don't get me wrong, PCs are in constant flux and so there is no reason to look for what is next, but with AV there can always be better times to buy into stuff or not. I started slowing down my DVD purchases at the end of 2004, and more or less stopped just before BD came out. But to me it does not make sense to say "I won't be buying BDs because something else better will eventually replace it", that can be 20 years from now.

I have about 1,200 DVDs..... which is next to nothing compared to the serious "collectors" but I only bought DVDs I would enjoy, or for family etc.......

The issue is..... I bought all of my DVDs at retail places like Best-Buy (mostly) or Barnes and Noble for my Criterions........ I never did any "Forums" or anything like that, and didn't use Amazon AT ALL....

As prices come down, my Blu-ray collection will easily surpass my DVD collection in record time

most of them, I was never into counting them and in boxes it is not easy to guess (might still be over 3000). I gave a few to my sisters/nieces/nephews and friends stuff they loved, but I am not into selling them. In the end I spent a small fortune (obviously) and you don't really get anything back (a couple of $s for a film you paid more then 20 for?). Now they are in the basement in boxes with VHS and beta tapes.

Thanks for the massive feedback guys.I know i'm sure i'll go hard into Blu-Ray because I can't resist it and dvd's don't cut it anymore.I tried to sense myself into sticking with them but it just would not work. How on earth btw do you get 3000 dvd's? I recently clocked off at 350 (all original).I guess mainly due to the reason I buy them at stores and never came in contact with places like this :-).It's bound to get worse.I must say i'm very selective about my movies,as i'm plan to be with my blu-ray collection.I hate buying in a frantic mood and afterwards realising I did'nt need particular movies..Keep the feed coming ppl..

Also I'm already sick and tired of 10 seperate versions coming out of each movie, and ppl telling the first ones are not good and such. What are your viewings on this?Just recieved Gangs Of New York for instance and read a bad review somewhere.I expect a blu-ray to be near perfect and not in the mood for constantly looking out for better versions and stuff. It's expensive enough as it is..Not?

unfortunately that's the way of the beast, it happened thousands of times with dvd and it will happen just as many times with blu.

I try to only buy films which I think I will watch more than once. Otherwise, it just isn't worth it. In the internet age, you can see virtually any film you want and then later decide if it's worth the bucks.

3000 films is insane. You could sit in front of the tube for hours everyday and not get through them all in ten years. I'm lucky if I get through 75 movies a year.

my buddy's Uncle has over 9,000 DVDs........ I keep meaning to ask him if he has gotten into Blu-rays yet..... but I am sure he has.

Best advice (which I should take, but don't ) would be to WAIT..... prices come down, and great sales happen...... if you don't buy everything upon release, or shortly after..... 5 years from now, you'll have saved a LOT of money......

And try to restrain yourself from those expensive retail "impulse" buys..... wait the three days for Amazon or wherever....... I know it's nice to get something in your hands immediately..... but you pay extra for that!

And finally..... a Netflix or similar membership is worth it's weight in gold....

during VHS I was a renter, but I was an early adopter of DVD and finding titles early on was difficult. Eventually I realized I hate having to leave my home just because I felt like a movie, going to the rental place and the one I want is out, bringing a movie home and then not having time to see it, having to bring it back or there are late fees. ... so I quit renting and every movie I want to watch at home I buy. 5$ bins and sales did the rest. I think the most I ever bought at a time was around 40 when a store had many WB titles for 3$ (the most for BD was exactly 20 when sig had a sale where buy5=5%off, 10=10%, 15=15% and 20=20%)
