Default Layer switch on Blu-ray.

Now that Sony have been using 50gb on their movies. Are we gonna be seeing layer switch in the middle of the movies like DVD now? That's one thing I didn't like about DVD.
How much space does it need for a movie to fit on Bluray? with max bit rate.

Well, I just got a player couple weeks ago and I don't really own that many movies yet that's why I'm asking the question for those who have large bluray collection.

I never even noticed layer switching on DVD. The Denon had a large enough buffer.

I remember the layer switch triggering a freeze in the picture for about one second on DVD but with my PS3 I have so far never seen any switch freeze with any Blurays so I figure it's a thing of the past

Yes the buffers on BD players are large enough to have a smooth transition betweeen layers. Freezing in between layers is a thing of the past.

Not only are the layer change pauses gone, but Blu-Ray supports seamless branching too. Check out Spiderman 2 and 2.1 (on the same Blu-Ray disc). You'll have to either buy the trilogy box set or rent the Spidey 2 Blu-ray on blockbuster.com or netflix.com.

Pretty awesome technology. I understand your concern xwingsct. I had the same concern when I bought my PS3, but I can confirm that there is no such thing as layer change pauses on Blu-ray. I will always be aware of this when watching higher capacity Blu-ray discs too (if BD100 or BD200 ever become a reality).

Yes, and what about Close Encounters? There are 3 different versions on 1 disc. Pretty cool.

Cool that's one thing I hate in DVDs.
Some DVDs are pretty good at where they put the layer switch.
Some are very noticeable.

at one point there was a little pause, like 1/4 sec or less & that is so far that the only time I have seen a 'layer switch' or whatever it was on any of my bd's. I was watching the 'Special Edition' version & have not gotten around to the others.

With my PS2 is was always obvious, with the PS3, not at all, not even a microsecond of a blip.

It's called advancement in technology, something you won't find on HDDUD. My first DVD player froze the first time I watched The Matrix and it hit the layer switch. At least Blu-ray took eliminating these technical hurdles seriously.
