*****WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD*****
I have watched the 2002 version of Solaris, which I believe is based on the 1972 movie called Solyaris. The following is about the 2002 offering. I think both are based on 1961 novel by Stanisław Lem. I am not going to present a synopsis for this 2002 movie. It is best described by experiencing the movie itself. Its often aired on IFC (Independent Film Channel), available on DVD, but unfortunately not available on BD. My questions, and the whole reason behind this posting, is to ask those that have seen this film to place themselves in the shoes of Chris' character and offer what they would do upon arriving on the remote research facility, or even before then. I find it hard to believe that a character that is suppose to be educated to the point of professional licensing allows him to treat others psychologically, yet certain common sense questions are not asked early on in the 2002 film. For instance, a friend on the remote research facility asks that his friend Chris be sent out to help with what is going on. While Chris asks DBA, the company now owning the research project, informs him a security team was sent out and lost, he ask no more questions before agreeing to going out there. While a sane [wo]man would have done so, apparent Chris' character is so troubled in personal problems (recently widowed to suicide wife), his judgment is clouded enough to wave all self-preservation instincts. I accept that this movie takes place in the future, and wonder if this make-believe world has never had the pleasure of Alien in the social construct. Bare in mind the novel certainly could not have had such a precept as it was written 18 years before that film came out. Still, how trusting would you be to your safety knowing a security team sent out is missing and an incoherent message from a team member is the only thing to go on? I wondered about this as I try to empathize with the character, and well before the 2002 film progresses any farther. Once Chris' arrival takes place a whole lot of other questions come to mind that the character seems oblivious to asking when a sane [wo]man would be asking them. BTW, I am not trying to knock the movie. I really enjoyed it and when, if ever, it becomes available on BD I will buy it. GC is not bad of an actor and seems to play the character as well as it was written, and MN is always easy on my eyes. I recommend this film to anyone. |
