No pre-owned games to be allowed for Playstation 3
That's the speculation, anyroadmap By Marc McEntegart: Wednesday 09 November 2005, 11:11 A PATENT may allow Sony to ensure that no game would be playable from any console other than the one in which it was first read. Joystiq is reporting that this patent is the source of the many rumours that will mean as much to gamers as DRM is for music fans. The technology would allow an authentication code to be read and then rendered unreadable, making the software unplayable on any machine but the one which first read it. But this has caused considerable backlash from the gaming community. While many are aware of the double profit companies make on pre-owned games, this would ensure the death of trading games between friends and even going to a friend's house to play a little multiplayer. No less than Ken Kataguri himself is listed among the inventors, which makes it look like this is a move that came from very high up. It has already been pointed out that many Playstation users have had to replace their console, surely this would leave us high and dry in that event. While the PS3 hasn't been expressly mentioned in the patent in English or Japanese it would be the obvious place to employ this new technology, regardless of how little gamers will appreciate it. Between this and the DRM scandal, Sony could be looking at a serious drop in interest in the PS3. You can be sure you'll see more on this as it develops. As gamers, we can only hope that modern technology won't undermine the tried and tested barter system. Source: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27568 |

After Sony's last attempt with music CD's I would be surprised of they tried this. What if you had 2 x PS3's in your house - or you replaced your PS3 due to an untimely demise (Accidental breakage)? It's technically possible and the DRM in BD Movie has a similar nasty.
They may have a patent on the technology, but will that comply with various countries trade practices and fair trade laws? We have seen the result of that in Australia. |

...The Inquirer? I don't think Sony would seriously commit consolide. They can't really be doing that. It must be a buncha Xbox Fan boys starting hype or getting the scoop on some long forgotten meeting. I don't think the leaders of a company would do something that dumb, considering the piracy for it is already going to be difficult considering no one owns a Blu-Rays dirve. And they will be expenisve for most of PS3's console life.

I had to revive this old thread so I could vent. I had never heard this rumor before today. I was talking to a couple of younger guys working at a Starbucks and the topic of video games came up.
They said that games on the PS3 can only be played on one system (sound familiar?), and that's why the Blockbuster next door wasn't renting PS3 games anymore. They even said they tried to use one of their friend's games on their system and it wouldn't work, giving some error about not being able to overwrite some kind of data. That didn't make sense to me, but I wasn't going to argue with him. I could see how that might be possible with the online games, but not if you don't network your PS3. I am just getting into PS3 games because I mainly use mine for Blu-ray, so unfortunately I wasn't armed with the truth yet. I came home and looked this up online and found the original story on joystiq from way back on Nov 8, 2005. Then I found it discussed here in the forums. I can't believe how such a dumb piece of FUD can still be around 2 years later. I wish I had known about this already so I could have told those 2 kids how wrong they are. I didn't check the Blockbuster to see if they aren't renting PS3 games, but I am 99% sure that I have seen them there before. I am definitely going there tomorrow to see if that part of their FUD is true or not. |
