Default The Muppets Movie

Hey,

Yes the title says it all. A new Disney Muppet Movie is coming to theaters.

Quote:
A couple weeks ago it was reported that Flight of the Conchords director James Bobin has signed on to direct the new Muppet film for Walt Disney Pictures. The screenplay written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), was titled The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, but has now been renamed The Greatest Muppet Movie Of All Time.

Enjoy.

Muppets From Space was not only from the director of "Alvin & the Chipmunks" , but also considered to be the Let It Be that finally broke up the old-school performer cast:
Show headwriter Jerry Juhl retired after his earlier script was passed over, and Frank Oz joined other performers protesting Brian Henson's handling of the movie and the company.
And like "Alvin", it's got a sour, plastic sitcom feel to it that pretty much says what we fans have been saying ever since: Juhl understood the Muppets (including Christmas Carol), but nobody else did without Jim.

But since the thread asked for "Greatest" Muppet movies instead of just giving us a news item, the First one, next question.
It's the only one that creates the Muppet's "own" world, instead of putting them in real-life surroundings.
And I'd put "Sesame Street: Follow That Bird" as a close second long before I ever picked the other two Jim-era ones.

I still have issues with planning my WDW vacation next month. All I see are muppets. Not use to it yet. It's not a Disney creation.

The Muppets have been part of Disney since the late 80's

Yeah I am actually shocked by the fact that Disney is running the show. Were the rights acquired by Disney.

So far as I know Disney bought the rights to the Muppets before Jim Henson passed away.

Marvel Comics isn't a Disney creation either, but it didn't stop the Mouse from purchasing Marvel.

Could you elaborate on that? What exactly happened on Muppets From Space? What's the deal between Brian Henson and the muppet performers? I'm curious, I don't know anything about that, haven't even seen that movie.

Anyway, I'm on the fence with the new movie. The title, 'The Greatest Muppet Movie Of All Time' can be an easy target extremely quick, and with, what, only Dave Goelz as an original cast member(?), I doubt that this can be really good.

My favorite is the one where they take jobs in New York. The rats are working the restaurant. Don't know what it's called but that's the 1.

Disney sealed the deal with Jim Henson, but not soon enough before Jim passed away to seal it--
A few movie deals (Christmas Carol, Treasure Island) were in the deal, but Brian had to finalize it, and the '90 deal eventually fell through.
(Even that Muppet movie attraction for the Disney Parks, while greenlit under Jim's deal, was still there only on special permission by Brian.)

Michael Eisner was still obsessed getting the Muppets "back" (and even most of the current Iger-era execs aren't sure why, although recent theories suggest the popular confusion over who owns the Sesame Street characters), but never did officially make them Disney property until '03, just before the Wizard of Oz movie.

I'm not clear on what happened, myself--
If you originally thought the title should've been "Muppets IN Space", and was going to be some extension of "Pigs in Space", well, so did Jerry Juhl.
His script was passed over in favor of...whatever the Gonzo plot was, and as he was near retiring anyway, there wasn't much good feeling there.

There was some grumbling in-house about what new direction Brian Henson was going to take the company, and Oz and some of the other performers objected to Brian hiring Tim Hill as director, eventually leading to a walkout.
Eric Jacobsen's been playing Fozzie, Piggy and Cookie Monster ever since, and that's not the only element that's made the new post-Space company feel like it's been on autopilot.

And Steve Whitmire (if he's the one still playing Kermit).
Jerry Nelson's the old trouper still playing Sesame Street, but don't know if any of his Show characters are in the movie.

The fact that Disney has been pushing the Muppets as spokesman for their "Volunteer and get a free day at Disney World" promotion gives away a LOT of Disney's worries about Kermit & co. at the moment:
After their being stuck with all of Michael Eisner's time and money to get the group in the first place, we don't seem to remember Wizard of Oz, we don't remember the Christmas TV-movies; all the younger kids seem to remember the Disney-owned Muppets for nowadays is for making a cameo appearance on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition".
