Steven Soderbergh’s 'Contagion'

Steven Soderbergh's virus-outbreak action-thriller "Contagion" looks to be going from A-list casting to well, more A-list casting.

After the Scott Z. Burns script was recently prioritized over all other Soderbergh projects ("Liberace" for one), the film is evidently attracting major interest at the European Film Market as "several bidders have offered greenlight commitments." A $60 million budget is already being mentioned.

The stellar cast for the pic features the likes of Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, pushing the line up almost to the 'Ocean's' films' level in terms of both name and size.

Burns' script is a multi-stranded story taking place over four continents and centering on the outbreak of a deadly virus, an idea that originated from discussions between Burns and Soderbergh during production of "The Informant!" that catalyzed after an on-set sneeze.

Production is slated to begin this fall before Soderbergh moves onto his "Liberace" biopic starring Michael Douglas and Damon.

The premise does kind of sound like a book by Robin Cook... called "Contagion".

Steven Soderbergh can put together one hell of a cast. He's got Gina Carano, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, and Mathieu Kassovitz starring in Knockout as we speak. And he's already got Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow set to star in his deadly virus thriller Contagion, which will shoot later this year. The Playlist is now reporting that Laurence Fishburne might end up being cast in a "major role" in Contagion if his schedule works out. And if that happens, this might just be the best cast anyone has ever assembled.

As we already know, Contagion is about an attempt to contain a deadly viral outbreak. It's supposed to have an "ultra realistic" vibe to it (but will not be like the Ocean's films), which is perfect for this flu-infected world we live in, and will play out over four different continents. Most of the cast announced so far will play an "international team of doctors and scientists brought in by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) once the sickness outbreak starts." If Fishburne joins as well, his role is "said to be as big as all the other actors announced thus far." I really hope he figures out how to fit this in his schedule, because I'd love to see him.

It was also announced yesterday that Warner Bros will be distributing Contagion and helping finance the $60 million budget. The script was written by Scott Burns of The Informant! and The Bourne Ultimatum. We'll definitely let you know if Fishburne officially joins the cast and if we hear anything else about this.

The narrative centers around the miscommunication surrounding a viral outbreak. Director Steven Soderbergh is re-teaming with The Informant! scripter Scott Z. Burns, with a cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, and Jude Law. He’s also making his first 3D movie. Could be very cool.

Plot:

- Gwyneth Paltrow as Beth Emhoff, a business woman back from a trip in Asia and who's struck down by a mysterious ailment
- Matt Damon as Thomas Emhoff, Beth's husband, who's forced to care for his wife, and soon his step-son, as her condition worsens.
- Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Ellis Cheever, the head of the Center for Disease Control (CDC)
- Kate Winslet as Dr. Erin Mears, she works for the CDC
- Marion Cotillard as Dr. Leonora Orantes, a European doctor who's working for the World Health Organization
- Jude Law as Alan Krumwiede, a blogger with an unfortunate interest in conspiracy theories,

From what I heard, Steven Soderbergh's Contagion movie won't be a sensationalist sci-fi movie, it will actually be rooted in reality: what we'll see in the movie Contagion could definitely happen today. So following the recent H1N1 outbreak, this film may revive the public’s fear... But well it's just entertainment, and maybe it's for the best: we should not let our guard down! Potential virus outbreaks are just lurking around, waiting for their time...

Def looking forward to it. The cast is obviously top notch, which doesn't always mean success, but does deserve the benefit of the doubt (especially with Winslet, who is very picky with her roles). I'm def a Soderbergh fan--there's no doubt he has great range as a director, ranging from somewhat documentary, to sci-fi, to caper, to biopic, to drama.

A lot of people can be wrong, I believe this has been shot in 3-D though the Directors content, so this films 3-D is not unnecessary.
