Default 70mm Films transferred to Blu-ray

The quality achieved by 70 MM transferred to blu-ray is jaw dropping. Some of the most acclaimed picture quality releases have come from 70 mm sources.

The Dark Knight IMax scenes.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Baraka
South Pacific
Patton

There is a depth to the image in this format that is really amazing, almost 3D like in some cases.

Which are the 70 mm films you are waiting to waiting to be released on Blu-Ray?

I'm waiting for

The Sound Of Music
Lawrence Of Arabia
Ryan's Daughter
Hamlet 1996
My Fair Lady
West Side Story
Ben-Hur

Specially waiting for 2 David Lean films. They already look fantastic on SD.

Any news of which are the upcoming 70 mm films on Blu Ray?

I would love to see more 70mm films get the blu-ray treatment.

Baraka is one amazing looking disc.

How The West Was Won was shot in Cinerama, which is a camera with three lenses, giving you three strips of 35mm film next to each other.
Blade Runner only had the special effects scenes shot in either VistaVision or 70mm, as a lot of movies did that had special effects (it was even used a couple of years ago). So neither is truly 70mm.

And Patton looks awful if you think about how it could've looked. Hopefully 20th Century Fox will give that a re-release.

Im most looking forward to Laurence of arabia and Ben hur. Some other movies you might want to check out are the Searchers and Grand prix and mutiny on the bounty. They all look great too.Not all are 70mm but I think vista vision and super panavision, but they will knock your socks off.

Blade Runner was for the most part shot on 35mm, and the graphic scenes where shot on 65mm.

Revenge of the fallens Imax scenes where also shot on 65mm.

The Dark Knight's IMAX sequences look really fantastic. I recently upgraded from my 1080i to a 65 inch 1080p and the PQ truly is marvelous. Sometimes, I just feel like I'm going to fall out of my couch and through the screen into Hong Kong.

Sorry to keep this simple but I would like to see as many as possible.

I would just LOOOOOOVE to see all these new big budget films being filmed using 70mm or IMAX

No. It was shot on 35mm and blown up to 70mm. David Lean was reported to have been disappointed at the results and went back to 70mm for his next film, Ryan's Daughter.

Yep, Zhivago wasn't shot on 70mm. I don't like the movie either but its a magnificently beautiful looking movie regardless. It will probably look great on BD.

Ryan's Daughter is a marvel of cinematography. The film gets a lot of flak for being one of Lean's lesser films but boy the image blew me away even on DVD. That movie if properly transferred from 70 mm sources will truly shock people by its amazing PQ.

Better examples for what 70mm can look like on BD are Transformers 2 IMAX shots and Grand Canyon IMAX BD. How the West Was Won (Cinerama) looks good too. Any well shot material from 4K digital cameras will look equally detailed and sharp on BD as 70mm sources, with potentially less grain/noise in addition.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I was stunned by Dark Knight IMAX scenes PQ. I believe it is the very best PQ I have encountered so far. Those scenes just assault you with their clarity, depth and definition. What would you say is the best PQ you have encountered so far?

Ditto 2001. For a 40 year old film, I think the PQ just kills. I found it pretty awe-inspiring. Maybe you didn't think it was great because of the special effects, which though great are admittedly 40 year old and constitute a large part of the movie.

Here's the issue with 70 mm films. While making the BD, the makers don't always use the 70 mm original negative which is a pity, if they make the BD from a second generation 35 mm print, much of the quality is lost. I think that is what must have happened with Patton BD and Fall Of The Roman Empire BD, both look good but not 70 mm good.
Fall Of The Roman Empire BD is widely reported to have been made using 35 mm sources.

So I think if the original 70 mm negative is properly restored and used for making the BD, these movies will achieve the highest quality possible for any BD.

Can you recommend any films shot on 4k digital that are available on BD? I simply hate digitally shot films but I might give it a try.

I know it's not a classic or on anyone's "favorite" list, but I'd be interested to see a proper transfer of Far and Away, which was shot on 65mm.
