Default 70mm Blow Ups

Hi there,

I have a question. A lot of movies back in the 80's that were filmed using the Panavision process and some of those movies had special 70mm blow ups created for specific theatres.

According to IMDb the aspect ratio changes from 2.35:1 to 2.20:1 for the 70mm print.

Now does that mean that the frame has been slightly cropped or merely stretched upwards to accomodate the frame?

Yes, and no.

2.21:1 is the projected AR of 70mm. A bit more information is on the frame, covered by the inboard mag stripes. In the final analysis, the image would be slightly cropped left and right.

In proper projection the difference between the aspect ratios should be handled by upward movement (opening) of the top masking, creating a larger, HIGHER, image.

Okay Thanks.

Great work on restoring the Godfather by the way, never seen them look so colourful.

Part 2 on DVD was rather washed out as I remember.

Default The Dirty Dozen

For years I thought The Dirty Dozen was presented in the 1.75:1 aspect ratio. I'm watching it now on TCM and the ratio is 2.20:1 and that led me to find that it was released as a 70mm blowup, as well as the aforementioned 1.75:1. I also see that, apparently, all the Blu-ray versions are the narrower ratio. Does anyone know of a release of the wider version?

No, because a 70mm blowup is just that, a blowup. The OAR is indeed 1.75:1 and was shot on 35mm.
