Yesterday Paramount defection has seem to dampen the spirits of a few here. One announcement, and you start to read about doubts on blu-ray success, or begin to second guess the BDA strategy, or worse read about people considering going neutral. If you want to make the announcement worse, go neutral(I am not speaking to those who are already format neutral, but to new people considering it now). In doing so, you will just prolong the war even more, and create even more confusion in the market. I know many of us really like Transformers, but are you willing to prolong this for one title? Even though I own a HD DVD player, I am not. I will just wait for it to come to blu-ray. Sometimes you have to stand up for a principle, and this kind of attitude seems to be in short supply.
Secondly, you need to understand that you cannot be all jacked up when things are going well, and then messed up when they are not. As long as studio after studio(mostly smaller)announced support for the format, everyone was cocky and confident. Now that we have been given a glancing blow(because that is really all it is) some people are lashing out in a very illogical way. If you support blu-ray like many of you stated when things are going our way, then support it when we get tripped up. You see the HD DVD guys stubbornly and tenaciously support their format till the end. We have to support our format to victory regardless. A deal like this could not have come to fruition unless their are other things going on. I have been in the film business all of my working life, and deals cut with this amount of money means that something was about to change, or will change in the future. I do not want to start any rumors, but something must be going on at Universal that makes Microsoft need Paramount badly, or this kind of deal would not make much sense at all. This war will be full of up and downs. The best we can do is effect the outcome of this war is with our wallets. If you want to protest the Paramount deal, do so by not buying their media. Don't penalize the supporting bluray studios by not purchasing content our of fear and uncertainty. Bluray is going no where. In six months I went from zero to 141 discs, and that is because I am confident in the end bluray will prevail. When somebody gives me a right hook, I try and beat them down through the floor. This is what you have to do to HD DVD. You have to buy bluray, and we have to do it in mass numbers to get a complete victory. Keep your chin up guys, even if it is a little bruised. |

Absolutely right.
We've had nothing but good news for months and we all got spoiled by it. I can admit that. You're also right about this: You see HD-DVD zealots clinging on on nothing more than delusions and scraps for months on end. So again I look around and I won't name names, but where's the heart? Where's the resolve? We've got a hell of a lot more to stand on than HD-DVD folks do for their format. It's not even close, even still today! I'll be damned if I'm going to go back to DVD only or buy into HD-DVD and help MS get what they want and keep this market split. No way in hell. |

The only thing the announcement changed for me is that I won't be getting Transformers on Blu-Ray this year. Other than that, it's business as usual for me. My BD collection is up to 170 titles and still growing. How can you go wrong when you've got folks like Spielberg on your side?
Look, this thing is far from over. I think we're in for some big surprises down the road. Don't let people fool you into thinking this Paramount deal is as cut and dry as it seems. Especially, when you've got top talent (Spielberg, Michael Bay, etc) making noise. The fallout is far from over folks. |

I'll keep my chin up and still support Blu-ray. But I'm also getting an HD DVD player now. I think both are sticking around now.

Good thread. At the end of the day, you will get a better HD experience with Blu-ray. Going neutral or quitting Blu-ray support just because of this announcement is only supporting the growth of an inferior product. Do you want to watch HD movies and know in the back of your mind KNOW that they could look better? Why support that? Imagine longer movies like Lord of the Rings squeezed onto an HD DVD, as opposed to having the legs it needs on Blu-ray. Don't stop supporting the format because of one hiccup, you're only hurting yourself.

When it's my money on the line, I'm going to act in my own best interest. I love movies, and I hope Blu-Ray comes out on top, but I'm done spending my hard earned cash in a futile attempt to prop up companies who will shit all over us when they get a big enough offer. Until this war is resolved they won't see another penny from me.

I'm not short-sighted or a sheep (MS will not herd me over there) so I will not own a HD DVD player. Blu-ray is the format of choice. |

well seeing as how i hate microsoft and will never buy a 360 and have never had more then a millisecond thought of buying a hddvd player my support has never been more solidly in the blu camp. mostly because i believe that bluray is a better product. just as i believe that the playstation 3 is the best game system that unfortunately has crappy games being made for it. i tell everyone i know that blu ray is amazing and i have converted 3 people to the cause so far and plan to show as many people as possible that blu is the ONLY real choice.

I made my choice before we gained the lead, so I will not let a punk like Paramount blow my buzz. We are the consumers...they don't have money if we won't give it to them. If they want it, they need to give in to us, not the other way around.

![]() Personally, I find Paramount's (and Microsoft's) behavior to be contrary to the interests of the consumer and frankly repugnant. I have no intention of falling prey to these tactics by spending money on HD DVD's and, in fact, will now spend sizable amounts of my disposable income on two new BD players for my kids and each and every title I even faintly think my family might want. |

Great post Sir Terrence. Can I "digg" it?
![]() For me, I wasn't getting Transformers or Shrek 3 without renting first (extremely cautious buyer here ![]() If this taught me anything, it's that my favorite movies may not be here forever. I'm no longer going to hold back my purchases on movies I want to buy just so I can "catch a sale". (I just went to Amazon and ordered a few, and I'm going to go overseas to find the Island BD which is distributed by Warner in UK -- this will be my first import.) I'm also going to upgrade my TV so I can enjoy them better. Maybe I'll upgrade my home theater system or buy a house while I'm at it. ![]() These things are only going to last 10 years before the next generation comes along anyway. Worst case, if all else fails, I know I can still play my movies -- since we have PS3 on board, Sony is not going to stop supporting it for at least that long. ![]() enjoy gandalf ![]() |

yeah they may have more money then us but if fewer amounts of people are supporting the lower end cheaper format than they will be forced to change with the times .. you may not be bill gates but millions of tiny voices make one huge one ...
