Default Movie series split up by format war/studio exclusivity

I was thinking about this when I first got into Blu-ray a few months back and went to buy the Terminator trilogy. When I realized that only the first two were released on BD, I didn't really mind that much, considering the last one sucked anyway. But it got me thinking about what other series will be split up by the format war. So I've compiled here a small breakdown of a few series that I realized would be broken up by studio exclusivity. It's obviously incomplete and there may a few errors, some of the titles haven't even been announced yet. I've just thought it out according to each movies producers and distributors.

The Terminator Trilogy
BD -The Terminator (MGM), Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Lionsgate)
HD -Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Warner Bros.)

Hellboy Series
BD -Hellboy (Sony)
HD -Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (Universal, not yet announced)

The Evil Dead Trilogy
BD -The Evil Dead (Anchor Bay, not yet announced), Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (Anchor Bay)
HD -Army of Darkness (Universal)

The Living Dead Series
BD -Night of the Living Dead (Anchor Bay? Fox?, not yet announced), Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead (Anchor Bay)
HD -Dawn of the Dead (2006 Remake, Universal), Land of the Dead (Universal)
--Night of the Living Dead was released on DVD by both Anchor Bay and Fox, but Fox I believe was most the most recent. I didn't bother with the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, though I believe Sony distributed the DVD, nor did I bother with the upcoming Day of the Dead remake or Diary of the Dead because they're both made by smaller studios and I don't know who'll distribute the home releases.

The View Askewniverse
BD -Clerks, Chasing Amy (Disney/Buena Vista, not yet announced), Dogma (Sony/Lionsgate, not yet announced), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Disney, Buena Vista)
HD -Mallrats (Universal), Clerks II (Weinstein Company)

Halloween Series
BD -Halloween (Anchor Bay), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (Anchor Bay, not yet announced), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, Halloween: Resurrection (Disney/Buena Vista, not yet announced)
HD -Halloween II, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Halloween (2007 remake) (all Universal, not yet announced)

So those are a few of them. I was wondering if anyone could think of any other series being split up, especially considering Paramount/Dreamworks recent turn to HD-DVD exclusive. This whole matter really bothers me because I refuse to go neutral, so I have to wait until the war is finally won (which is going to take forever now) before I can finally have some complete series.

Interesting post. I assume by the time Hellboy 2 comes to HD this crap will not be such an issue.

I actually just noticed that Blu-ray owners are essentially being denied remakes, or HD-DVD owners are stuck with them, depending on how you look at it.

1. Dawn of the Dead original, Blu-ray. Remake, HD-DVD.
2. The Getaway original, both BD and HD. The remake, HD only.
3. Halloween, BD only. The remake is gonna be HD exclusive.
4. To some degree, even King Kong as the original was last released on DVD by Warner, but no hi-def release yet. But the most recent remake is HD exclusive, and Paramount owns the first remake.

Hmm...

Okay so maybe Hellboy 2 and Night of Dead are out lol.

Warner has only released it as HD, no BD release date thus far, correct?

Terminator 3 would come out in BD at some point if Warner doesn't change.

Barring some strange announcement from Warner, T3 could be out before Christmas on Blu-ray along with Batman Begins.

Apparently Sony owned the right to Hellboy 1, but it didnt do very well at the box office to cover the cost/marketing of the movie. So when Hellboy 2 was brought up, Sony shot it down but Universal picked it up after.

I have a very good feeling Rob Zombie's Halloween will be available in Blu-ray in the UK!

I've done a bit of research into Weinstein releases over here in the UK, and more often than not, Dimension films distributed by Weinstein in the US (HD DVD only) are distributed by Buena Vista here or some neutral studio.

The ones coming to mind right now are:

Scary Movie 4 - HD DVD only in US / Blu-ray only in UK
Wolf Creek - HD DVD only in US / neutral in UK (through Optimum)

A few are released by Paramount over here, but we all know how that is now!

So there is a good chance you'l be able to import Halloween 2007 whenever it is released. Here's hoping!!

Do you have anything concrete gentlemen? Any hard evidence. Right now you are only blowing up my skirt... From the Omega Man himself.... The Omega Sector, the last line of defense....

So is T3 and Batman Begins coming out on Blu-ray this year?

Thanks a bunch.

Firefly is on Universal HD all the time. Isn't Universal tied to it somehow? Or did they just get the rights from Fox?

It is already out on HD DVD and not BD, so thus far it is split.

Fox owns firefly

Uni has the license to show the series, and to produce 3 movies, or for 10 years whichever comes first. After which they would retain the rights to Serenity (though Fox probably has an option to buy it)
