Default Studio exclusivity in prior format wars?

Can anybody tell me if previous format wars (Beta vs VHS and LD vs CED) had this exclusive studio BS? Did some studios release on VHS and some on Beta, for instance? I do remember that movies on tape and LD were ungodly expensive, especially adjusted for inflation.

This is a great question I wish I knew the answer to! Didn't studios take sides in the DIVX vs DVD battle, too? I bet you Bill Hunt knows.

Well... the studio structure was different back then.

But basically, I was Universal vs. Sony just like today. Universal was up to the same old stuff back then and tried to sue Sony over the introduction of BetaMax technology to the general public in the landmark "BetaMax Case", although it was being utilized for commercial purposes. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. Sony won. Doesn't Universal ever learn. (interesting note however...Disney sided with Uni).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Co...y_Studios,_Inc.

"Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc., 464 U.S. 417 (1984)[1], also known as the "Betamax case", was a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States which ruled that the making of individual copies of complete television shows for purposes of time-shifting does not constitute copyright infringement, but is fair use. The Court also ruled that the manufacturers of home video recording devices, such as Betamax or other VCRs (referred to as VTRs in the case), cannot be liable for infringement. The case was a boon to the home video market as it created a legal safe haven for the technology, which also significantly benefited the entertainment industry through the sale of pre-recorded movies."

During the DVD days it was Disney/Fox that backed Divx over DVD. I seem to recall that Paramount did as well, but that one im not totally sure on.

Started out with Beta and the only studio I remember not supporting it was Disney though at the time I didn't pay much attention to which studio distributed what title.

Does anyone rmember if any studio(s) other than Disney VHS were exclusive?
